3l problems

Post by dogbox »

i replaced my 3l engine a while back with another second hand unit, piss me off this one is going the same way

the first was apprx 10% down in power, using oil, smoking under labour, had a compesion test done and fine, put in new injectors
but it was slowly getting worse, so got the second hand unit

took it to 3 different garages and no firm answers, mayby over fueling and bore wash one said, other said injectors so new ones went in,haha 3rd one said 'its mint, got more power than mine'

ive driven hilux's on the farm for 20 odd years and know how the power should feel in a good one,10% power loss in my eyes is big as they dont boast a lot any way, i still have the first in the shed, and guess its time to pull it down and find out what is wrong and work out the cost of a rebuild

Now im no mechanic,so any help advise will be much apprecated

If the problem has been passed onto the 2nd motor, it's probably not an engine fault.
Make sure the fuel lines are clean and the fuel filter is replaced.
On another note...
Did you swap the pump and injectors over from the 1st motor?
Could possibly be a pump fault.....

Hi, no complete motor swap except the intake man, used the kiwi new version not the jap import one

Its not going to hurt nothing to clean out my tank, fuel lines etc... did fit a new fuel filter when it was swapped

Question... i have a feeling both of these motors have had the fuel pumps tweeked slightly,is there any truth in over fueling doing any harm?

If the problem has moved over look at the fuel lines and pump it could be air getting in somewhere. Winding up the fuel increases the black smoke but you won't loose power unless way over done.

Our old ute at home (1995, 2.8 )was having serious issues, was tapped out at 105kph, could barely rev over 3000rpm standing still. Took the hose off the inlet to the filter housing and hooked the air gun stuffed with a rag around the tank filler and honestly blew for a mintue or so untill the sludgy crap stopped ozzing out. A new fuel filter (needed another a fornight later as the last of the crap came through) and air filter and she was back up to the top speed of 140ks (thats what it maxed out at new). Could be same thing, had just been filled up all its life from farm tanks. The diesel bug can get preatty cronic in them.

Hey mate theres a filter on the end of the pickup in the tank and some times under the banjo bolt with the steel line going into onto of the pump there could be a small mesh filter about as 3 or 5mm in dia and it has a spring under it, fuel pump screw in 1/4 a turn and make all the difference to and good clean airfilter.
