Engine check light on Escudo - What makes it come on?

Post by Zooky »

I have a 91 Escudo G16a Manual, and it has a bit of a unknown past and is not what you'd describe as mint condition.

Anyway, i've noticed that after about an hour of open road driving, the engine check light comes up on the dash. The car still drives perfectly, and a quick flick of the key off and back on turns the light off... :?

I read in an owners manual that this is to do with the emissions gear needing servicing, but there is no cat converter underneath.

Does anyone have any idea what sets this light going?

Cheers. :D

i have the same problem on my escudo... it seems to come on after about 1 hour of open road and by turning key off then back on, it stays off...

i checked the oil and water levels and they were fine... i don't think mine has a converter either...

:? :?

Yeah thought this was probably the case, I drove from Whangarei to Whakatane last weekend and the light was on for probably 80% of the trip. Out comes the bulb I reckon.... :)

Would also think about checking/replacing the Oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold/extractors. They only have a life of about 70,000-100,000km, replacing it should also improve fuel economy, as it won't run so rich.

LOL! Yeah I was wondering about that, seeing as it doesn't have one at all... There is no hole in the extractors for one to go in, so I guess it was cut off... rough bastards! I might consult the wiring diagram and see if I can locate the wire and perhaps look to fit one I think.

if you pull the bulb you "should" fail a wof as its a requirement
many things can make the check light come on .. and plugging in a scantool is the easiest way to get a answer ...
.. if it is for the cat .. there are ways to sort that .. without pulling the bulb

Yeah, I know, just like an ABS light, it could be doubled off the oil or charge light so it turns on with the key, but goes out once the engine is on. I didn't think we had emissions testing in clean green NZ anyway, unless something changed in the last little while? :D Anyway, if it doesn't have a cat converter, how will they know to look for the light on the dash?

there way a bulletin put out not so long ago in concerns to this
the lights all go out at different timming
if one is seen to be in sync with another .. they get sent for a scan ... ive already done a couple this month .. so its catching on

 Oh well, due for a warrant next month, so will see what happens then I guess. Regardless of what is happening with the engine check light, it's glaringly obvious that there is no cat fitted to it anyway.

why dont you just go get a scan done ? and then fix it ... it could be q pile of other shit .. the check light is not soley for the cat converter
it could be anythihng from a faulty engine sensor i.e cat o2 sensor tps etc
meh never mind

That's what I wanted to know, as the handbook only talked about it relating to nothing else but emissions gear. Will look into getting a scan done as it sounds like there could be a few other avenues.

Thanks for the advice. :D

As far as I now a 91 can not be "scanned" . All you can do is jumper the diag plug and read codes off the engine check light . Google the workshop manual and they will tell you how and what the codes are .

depends on the scanner you have .. some do just that
you plug it in .. it bridges the diag pins and then reads the pulses
just saves you having to look them up
