my prado has started making a whineing sort of a noise when im driving it only does it when get to bout 50kms..
almost sounds like a bearing or bent driveshaft? but i was wondering, its a manual, i converted to manual front hubs...
when im driving, with it in 2wd, should my front driveshaft still spin???
thinking that could be my noise maybe cos it does turn??

Hi Yah
In 2WD the front drive shaft should not spin.
There are two buttons on the dash, right hand side of steering wheel.
1 for Hub lock..and the other Hi4WD..
If you have the Hi4WD button in...regardless of any other button selection, it engages the transfer case and locks the front drive shaft to on...
So it turns..
As you have gone manual....the idiot lights no longer follow the normal pattern.
I have gone manual hubs also.
But I turn on the hubs button when I engage them manually..
Then when I need Hi4 and select it, all the lights work to tell me I am in 4WD.
Plus it reminds me to turn off my hubs at the end of a trip.
As for the whine.
My output bearing in the Transfercase to the Rear drive shaft used to whine at certain speeds...
When I removed the drive shaft from the flange and put the transfer case in nuetral (between Hi and Low) and spin it....
I was loose as mother goose.
Was time for a transfercase overhaul.
Hope that helps...
PM me if you want my number
Cheers

yea, my truck works in H4 when the button selected too, but its not in h4 its just in normal h2.. yea almost sounds like a dry bearing wanting to give way or something..
its weird bout the driveshaft tho cos i got the misses to jump in and drive forward slowly and yea even tho the front hubs are turned to free and its in 2wd the front driveshaft still turns?
what could cause this?
and when i press the button for H4 it does seem to be ingauging/disingauging the transfer????

It could be a stuck solenoid on the fire wall....
Putting vac pressure on the diaphram all the time.
Or the shaft which is moved by the vacume diaphram is stuck.
Keeping it in 4WD.
Or someone miss plumbed the vac system and it on all the time.
I have had it once where mine didnt go into 4WD when H4 was selected.
Turned out the shaft was sticky.
Note truck has to be running to supply vac pressure to the transfer case.
You can push the button all you like when its not running.... Nothing will move.
I have a manual for the transfercase somewhere in pdf.
Have fun...

in 2wd drive with manual hubs unlocked you will still get enough momentum through the drivetrain to keep the front driveshaft and diff turning even though there's no drive on it....that's normal

, whine I suggest checking wheel bearings.

Try this...
Engine off
Hubs off.
2WD setup.
Can you turn the front drive shaft by hand.
Yah gunna have to reach under and turn it.
If yes....it is o.k
If no....its still in 4WD.
With engine running.
In neutral on the 5spd box. Hand brake on.
Leave it in Hi range.
Push in H4 button on dash.
Can you turn the front drive shaft by hand.
If yes....its not working.
If no...Its working fine.
Turn off H4 button.
You should be able to turn driveshaft again.
With engine running.
In neutral on the 5spd.Hand brake on.
Move from High range to low range.
Can you turn the front drive shaft by hand.
If yes....its not working
If no....Its working fine.
That will sort out the 4WD system...
You could get residual drag from the hubs via axle via diff to the drive shaft.
But I have never seen it when playing with mine on jacks.
As for the whine... thats another story.

Got the whine in my prado too. Not there all the time but seems to be engine speed related when clutch is out (so its in the box) Does it at rest in neutral so I figure its in the input side of the box, for mine anyway. Looks like I need to save for a rebuild.

Sounds like its jammed in 4WD...
I wouldnt want to drive around at hiway speeds with it locked..
I am relying on the fact the hubs are set in free wheel and are not playing up and jammed on???
Hopefullly a vac line is not damaged, pulled off.
Make sure you have vac pressure at the supply lines.
With the engine running, pull it off at A and see if it sucks...
Here are some photos to help overide the system

Make sure the buttons are both off.

This is above the brake booster..
Unplug vac line B and connect it into the supply line at A.
This will bypass the switch and supply Vac pressure to the diapharm on the transfercase and disengade it OFF.
Note the engine should be running to supply vac pressure.
You should be able to turn the driveshaft.
If you want it to activate again, connect the lower vac line to supply to active it back again ON.
Handy if the switches play up in the field.

This is the vac actuator which could be jammed...or have a leak in the diapham. You can take it off in the truck, but its fiddly.
If you want give me a call on 09 833 6262
I am home till 130pm today.

k....
so i tried changing the vacuum lines over and no change..
i tried changing vacuum lines over at transfer, no change..
it is odd. because when i put it into 4HIGH it seems to work and the driveshaft is solid - cant turn it..
but when i put it into 2wd i can only turn driveshaft about 1/8th of the way around only goes so far back and forwards no further..
and also when i do turn it this 1/8th of a turn the rear driveshaft does the same amount of turn???
but then when i turn it again 5min later its the same but rear doesnt turn then it does then it doesnt???
might be a trip to a gearbox shop im thinking...

SOunds like it is jammed....
Need to take it to someone who has experiance with transfer cases. Most gearbox shops dont see enought of them to be called "experts"
Ask on the forum for someone to recommend a good one in your area.
If you were in AKl...
I would take a look for you....
