Hi all, my zook of 6 years ended on it's roof in november, writeoff due to repair vs market value.
Now have a BJ74 with 13B-T. Fitting a snorkel this weekend.
What is the approved method of testing for water tightness?

put a plastic bag over the snorkel top and the motor should start to starve/stall.

This is the first diesel I have owned.
Can any damage occur if I do stall it through lack of air?

Best way i found was a can of engine start (ether) and spray around joins,listen to motor if it starts to rev a bit higher then it's sucking air in through there.Worked for me

Don't do plastic bag, that can in the worst case bugger things up badly. Diesels suck lots of air and will suck the plastic bag in through the snorkel quite easily. If the bag aslo manages to find it's way past the air filter, guess where it ends up.

Just start the rig up with your snorkel hooked up , take the air ram off and hold something over the top that will not get sucked through but still seal it off (hand, solid jandle etc). If it leaks at all you should be able to hear it sucking air in.

Never tried the engine start idea, but don't see ant reason why that wouldn't work either, except that you need to cover every joint and possible areas where seals can break down.

Also remember that ether/engine start is highly flammable so be very careful where you spray it if you do try that idea

Hey, thanks guys.
You are so right about how they suck.
I bought a preloved Safari snorkel for $50 and plumbed it using medium grade hydroflow ducting, got a plumber to bronze in a new 80mm input to match the safari, and the 70mm oem input bronze capped.
I only have two joins so the ether trick will be simple and safe for me. Be good for future service checks also. In my case the 21yo donk is quite noisy so hearing a leak would have to be a stethoscope job.
