Clutch master cyl accumulator - why do they keep bursting??

Last night was cruising up the motorway and came upon stop start traffic so went through the gears got to second and clutch went to the floor. A lot of starting in gear wheelspinning antics and managed to get off the motorway.

I added fluid because I thought it was just my leaky slave cylinder, gave it an attempt at bleeding but still had no pressure, lots of smoking clutch fluid on the exhaust downpipe.

Couldn't really see what was going on because I was in the truck pumping the clutch but by the time I got around to the engine bay I could see fluid dribbling out the bottom of the silver bit...

(I've overfilled it a few times, hence the stripping paint  )

Looked it up on toyodiy.com and the silver bit is an accumlator - this is the 2nd one thats burst on me and this one only has about 15,000kms on it.

Can anyone tell me what it's for and why it would be bursting?
