Can I take off the pinion flange

Can I take off the pinion flange of my hilux diffs without taking the diff apart? It needs to be redrilled for the land rover driveshaft

hope so 8) , ive done it several times with out loosing the pinion into the diff yet :shock:

it will slide back a little way then stop as the pinion has a big taperd head as you well know.the pinion bearing catches the shaft before it can piss off totally. but thats just what ive experienced.i may have just been lucky....several times :D and i have to do it again soon to the front :wink:

thats assuming the hilux head is the same as a cruiser one....ish :?

Yes you can, Mark the possition of the nut, for the porpose of having the same preload when finished,undo the nut u will probilly need a long flat bar, drilled and bolted to the flange to stop the flange from turning.It is all ways good to replace the seal ( preventive maintinance)

This going on the road? You need to have some sort of adaptor between the two to centre the shaft on the flange. even if its a small ring that slips inside the 'hole' in the hilux one for the 'bump' on the landy d-shaft to fit into (if thae landy bump is small enough to fit inside the hilux flange), or have the landy flange bump machined down, or just make an adaptor like I did for mine:

for my Rangie box to Hilux axles I used a similar adapter to Steve for the front shaft. For the rear I paid a super-duper engineer to cut the spline off the L/R yoke and weld on the Hilux spline, then I shortened them both - no worries and smooth as :) . (it's not a road truck tho)

ahh, I see. How long can the spacer be as my drive shaft needs lengthening anyway.

I wouldn't think you'd want the d-cardan or u/j too far from the flange.. vibration will get worse the further away it is I would expect... 50mm max maybe? Just an (semi-educated) stab in the dark...

The D-shaft only needs to be lengthened about that. I'll have to find some alloy

The answer is to machine the two flange faces 100% paraell with each other, ie fit it onto a mandrell and cut both faces , before removing it from the lathe.

Mine are steel, and as Oldblue said, cut it from roundstock in a lathe or whatever method will give two 100% parallel mating surfaces or you'll have vibration.
