hilux swap for 2wd maybe

Post by Heath »

Hi guys,

Been thinking about swapping the lux for a 2wd ute and get a dedicated offroader for trialling.

I am looking for a DC or xtracab ute in std trim to use for work and as a tow wagon.

My wagon:

Hilux Double cab, 1987 with chev v6 (3.8lt), 30mm body lift (tray lifted 50mm), 50mm suspension lift with Rancho 5000's. Bull bar, spotties front and on roll bar. Roll bar with air tank built in. dual fuel (LPG, petrol). bucket type seats fitted up front. 15x8 steel wheels and 32x11.5x15 nankang mud star tyres (set of 5). All modifications certed.
extra guages fitted and new battery (and soon a sorted alternator -new or recon). Fuel system / cooling system recently overhauled ($1400) new hi torque starter motor and tonnes of spare bits.

What I want:

double cab or extra cab 2wd unmodified ute (no wof issues) capable of towing (no little engines), probably diesel, would consider unmodified 4wd ute. probably about 2.5lt. Around mid 90's vintage. Good tyres and serviced engine.

So there it is, any ideas or people wanting to get into the sport without all the hassles give me a call. At this stage I am just testing the waters so this isnt an absolute commitment to sell/swap but for the right deal you never know. I am In auckland (North Shore) so you know it has only been driven slowly and hardly taken off road (infact I spent all this time and money and havent really had it offroad - hence the 2wd ute with a dedicated trials truck idea)

well heath the 2wd utes are 2.4s and gutless as and the petrol are the same  and for a mid 90s it wont be cheap......

why not an early 60 serries cruiser on lpg with a 3f heaps of grunt and you wont get stuck when townig into trial meets  and the half the price of 2wd 90s and you can even sleep in it.....

good luck

Nah, going to get a 2wd (decided finallty last night) and a dedicated toy. The toyota utes I've had a quick look at (trade me) seem to be mainly 2.4's but the nissan and holden utes seem okay (2.5 - 2.8) some high mileages but not too worried if serviced, etc.

Will consider selling the lux for about $9000ono.
