1kzte blowing air on idle

Post by bigstu »

Hi today i pulled the air temp probe out while truck was idling to see if it made any difference i noticed air blowing out but when you increase the revs it changes to a vacuum is it nomal for air to blow on idle or should i be worried have also noticed oil seeping out gasket between inlet manifold and head and also shaft on throtle butterfly trucks only done 130000ks so shouldnt be stuffed.
advice please
Thanks Stu

Quick answer Yes to air comming out on idle, diesel thing.
Mine does it.. Works just fine.

Oil comming from butterfly Shaft is normal.
Oil from manifold to head....Gasket / manifold loose.
The oil is from the crankcase vent as the diesel doesnt have a PCV valve as on a petrol motor.
You will notice a hose from the rocker cover to the inkate pipe for turbo.
Should just have a light film on inside intake.
Obviosly you dont have high oil consumption.
Hope that helps.

Being an owner of a 1KZTE with only 74k on the clock I to have been wondering about the oil returning to the inlet via the crankcase breather as I have oil residue around the butterfly area. While running the idea of a catch can passed one of our Diesel Gurus at work he asked the question of how much the engine relies on this oil for upper lubrication that got me thinking If the EGR pipe is blocked off the oil should stay as an oil mist and not get clogged up with the exhaust, whats the thoughts of this ??.

...........

they don't.
theres a huge amount of trucks that vent that oil directly to the road and they don't have problems with the head/valves.

I looked at putting a catch can on my 1kz to stop the PCV oil making it through the turbo and into to intake manifold.

Research reveled that the design of the PCV outlet on the rocker cover has a flaw which allows oil to collect and pool a little and then get blown down the PCV pipe to the turbo.

A catch can will resolve this , however a lot of guys in Australia had problems with front end seals after fitting catch cans. the standard off the shelf catch can does not allow enough volume of air to pass through causeing a build up of pressure and subsequent seal failure.

my thoughts are that any oil making it into the turbo intake is detrimental to the health and efficiency if the turbo. Intake side lubrication of upper cylinder head should be via diesel mist.

they only have problems often due to using car sized outlets (9mm??). a lot of catch cans come with 12mm fittings which is whats required. then its whatever you use to filter the oil out with. make sure that still flows enough.

if in doubt get a provent. has proper filter and bypass valves should the filter clog up.
i think racor and donaldson also make some but are truck size (1" connections).

Mine is comming up 200,000 kms. Was a jap import so could add another 20 to 30k plus on that.
Will leave it stock standard on the vent. :D
Cant see the point.
Have enought things under the hood to go wrong / leak / fall off when out in the bush....
The EGR removal was the best thing I have done.

the blowby oil combines with the fine dust that gets through the ir filter, plus soot from egr (if its working) to form the sludge in the intake.
plus too much oil in the intake and the engine starts running on it.
you can also get preignition when the oil ignites upon compression.
