how difficult are these to set up i have a spare power steering pump and and i was wondering would i be able to use this to run a pto winch my only real issue is how fast could i get it to spin and how fast do i need it to spin to operate a pto winch at a good speed

i think that the volume a hydraulic unit would require would be far more than what a power steer pump could deliver.
im sure someone has looked into it here before and decided that it wouldnt be adequate. dont quote me on that tho

I read an add in a magazine that advertised that you pl;umb the winch into the power steering pump, and it runs them both.
I later read an article somewhere that it wasn't all that good as when running the winch you lost the power steering and also the other way round,when trying to steer, you lost "power" to the winch.
The guy was going to try runnin seperate pumps for the steering and winch. Just another power steering pump for the winch though, nothing special.
Thats just something i remember reading.

for power and l/speed you need 100lpm easy and for a good setup allow 5k and use parker there stuff is the best.
and with the slip the belt powersteering pump setup well......... every to there own but you might aswell put a boat reel on the front of youre 4wd....

yes well i'm not a great fan of electric winches as they tend to die when you really need them to work and the whole keeping electrics dry thing
and as for a pto winch first i need to find a pto for my wagon which is a little difficult they do exist but they aren't cheap
what about electric over hydraulic what are they like

want fast line speed.... top gear lots of revs
want slow line speed... middle gear medium revs
want suuuperrrrr slow line speed 1st gear at idle
absolutely love it, and it has all the pulling power of the engine

I'm with Wopass, nice an simple easy to fix, no heat....
And for the cost your looking to set up a Hydrolic you can get a drive built up for your trans, get a second hand winch... and still have change
hell I just bought a winch for the lemon for $370 now all I have to do is make a drive unit :scratch:
Oh and be warned at $5000 thats cheap a local told me at market rate (he works on hydrolics) his setup would cost $20000, his winch alone is $5000 then theres pump, hoses, tanks X line releaf valves etc
Oh and....
Crap!! snaps just like the rest.... it is the most expensive tho
.... thrust me on this, lets just say I spend a bit on hydrolics 
just steer clear of the cheap chinese shit and you'll be sweet oh and at least 2 wire for all your hoses, if you can afford it go 4 wire, the reason I say this is its overkill but it lasts and lasts, you will never kill it and for $30-40 a meter more its worth it
Krawlr is right the belt drive for your pump will slip when the torque comes on, thats why all the good guys go with hydrolic pumps off a PTO on the gearbox, one way you could deal to this is use is use a toothed belt, I remember someone saying they did this and it works fine you just have to replace the belt regualy

the major hassle i have is finding a pto to fit my wagon
for me the parts to make a winch are not an issue my old man has plenty of pumps motors valve banks and even hydraulic solenoids lying around his shed just taking up space i still need to organise a winch though
as to the belt slipping yes i could go toothed but i would rather try a b section v belt to begin with

1/2" .... and the reason I say 4 wire isn't becouse of preasure (think its rated to 6000 would be nice if the winch could handle it ) its becouse its tough... hook a stick or a rock into it and it dosn't matter .... the fittings are the same so there's no issues there and you'll never wear a hole in it
And yes you are right it dosn't bend as well as 2 wire, but hey you can't have it all

well the 2 wire will actually handle 5000 psi(safely) and 4wire is more like 120bucks more a meter
and half inch im hoping youre talking about a digger.
and mate parker stuff is the best i think. they are also the 2nd biggest hydraulic company in the world the reason they are the 2nd cos the other company makes deck chairs and crap aswell

$120 more, like I said Parker Prices .... I pay $25 more a meter through hydralink or pirtec... and I only get a 10% discount 
probably be cheaper to put a 4wire hose from either of the small guys than a 2 wire Parker
And yes you learn alot about hyd when you have to repair loaders
and I have used 1/2" on a winch, it was cheaper at the time than 3/8" so why not
