I have a 91 mwb 70 series 4.2- 1hz 5 speed ,h55f gear box.Transfer case was noisey .In the shed I had a spear box from a 1984 3b deseil so the mechanic swap the gears over. Both boxs are h55f.Problem is the main gears in the transfer case have different number of teeth so now I have different ratios.Bloody good on open road but I have loss the option of using 2nd low for crawling up hills ,now I use 1st which is to low for momentim.Question is both gear boxs are h55f but when did they change the gear ratios ? as now I am wanting to find a repacement gears to suit my orginal box as the ratios were great . Also the shafts are a different size, looks like they have beefed up the later box for a 1991 hz.Any help ?
Cheers

Sounds like a question for a Toyota expert. And that's not me on this one.
I imagine the ratio's in the transfer boxes will change from the 4 cylinder to the 6 cylinder and maybe from the petrol to diesels and maybe even from the auto's to the manuals.
I know that doesn't help, but there are always little differences that catch us out.

What are the diff ratios on your 70?
I had an 85 60 series with the 2h and 5 speed which had 3.7 diff ratios. I am guessing that there is an answer to problem in the diff ratios that were on the donor vehicle.

again not being overly helpful but toyota changed the split transfur case around that time frame from a 32mm ideller shaft to 38mm and this could well be some thing that changed as well I have both units under the house some where if i get a chance I will dig them out this weekend and have a spocket count and a bit of a measure up I thought the input shafts were the same diameter size thu.
also the 3b isnt a big revving motor so mybe the taller gears were to assist in getting all that touque delivered within the rev range
again only using limited knowlegde here and most welcome to be corrected if wrong
