SJ413 handbrake sticking after using 4wd

Post by dean zuk »

Recently after an afternoon 4wding at the waimak i noticed that i couldnt return my handbrake all the way to the floor without it popping back up about 3 clicks, but not holding the wheels at all. When it pops up there isnt much pressure pushing it up(a finger resting on it will stop it).

At first i thought it could be a stretched cable but after a few days it returned to normal until the next time i used 4wd.

Also my handbrake barely works as it is so this may have something to do with it?

Any ideas would be much appreciated as its kind of annoying driving round with the lever up.

Thanks in advance
Dean

I think a good inspection of your rear linings, cables etc ASAP!
Check for cable condition external and for binding of inner cable, will need to remove both ends to do properly. Check wheel cylinders-leakage siezed pistons...repair or replace any part/s that are not up to it. Definitely need good brakes and handbrake 4 wheeling!!

welcome to the world of zuk handbrakes.

the handbrake is the drum on the back of the transfer case.

You need to remove the rear drive shaft , undo the big nut and slide the drum off. Most likely the drum is full of crap / mud etc and the shoes completely worn away. Alternatively you could try to wash out the drum through the adjustment hole

Cables are well known to get dmaged and have kinks in them due to wear they route under the truck.

If you are buying new break shoes , Suzuki Carry rears are the same size and you get a spare set of shoes for a about the same price as buying specific handbrake ones.
