Newbie with 99 Disco 1

Post by Snafu »

Hi all
New to 4wd, got an old disco a couple of weeks ago, added rear ARB locker and Come-Up 9500 winch so far, more mods to come in the next few months. Already had an ARB bar and Snorkel.

Next on the upgrade list is a 2" ome lift, and cut the guards back a bit for clearance.

I was looking at getting the guards cut and flared by this outfit
http://www.twooffrd.iwarp.com/ But they seem to have stopped working for the time being.

Researching advice on Mud tyres and rims at present, considering Cooper, Simex, and Maxxis at the moment.

What size tyres are you wanting to fit?

Hi,

Welcome aboard. Good to see another Roverite. Of course it will be even better to see pic's ;)

Where are you based? I assume somewhere in Auckland? You could also talk to Morris at Stag 4 x 4.

So far as tyres are concerned, think about what you will be doing and there are other brands than just those. The tyre requirements seem to matter more than brand these days - consider size, compound, durability, availability, tread pattern, tread depth, amount of use/abuse and then brand rather than the other way around.

Howick, Auckland.

Not sure on size as yet. Suitable to do club trips, maybe equivelent of the grade 4 on Manukau 4WD Club or grade 3 on Auckland Landrover Club, along those lines anyway. Also keeping the current wheels/tyres for maybe trips around parts of Nth Island or top half of Sth Island.

Previous experience is about 20 years on trucks including several years on Bulk Fert spreaders 4x4, 6x4 and 6x6 in Otago on some of the steepest agricultural ground in NZ. Road Trains and Earth machinery in Aussie, and Double Decker buses in Europe covering thousands of km. (40+ Countries).

Morris is the man then. Stag 4 x 4 is in New Lynn.

Tyres? phew - huge range - big differences in prices. I just bought new feet, Bridgestone M/T D671. I have Grade 3 classification at LROCA. Michelin XZL were about the same price. Roughly $370 each.

But then, looking at your experience you should not have too much difficulty sorting the chaff from the hay.

Richard at AKL 4x4 seems to think he can get 32" on mine without too much hassle. His next job is to fix the arb bar and winch, then lift it, followed by tyres, then arb locker in front diff as Visa recovers on each stage. Hopefully all complete in a 6 month or less time frame unless Wife locks the visa card away.

The particular arb bar i have and the come up winch it hangs too low. Hit it on Friday at The Farm and broke one side of the casting at one end that holds 4 bars that hold the sides together, plus very minor movement in the bar.

Definately too low, but hopefully the lift and bigger tyres will help that, got bellied in one spot but winched off ok.

Will try Woodhill today and see how it goes, less clay and more sand there should be fun.

Edit: Will post a pic of the Winch and how it is hung as soon as. Wiring and freewheeling lever both hang about 6" below the bottom of the bull bar, way too low really. A big plate will protect it and front steering but hopefully Richard can raise it up a bit. Other option is to change the bull bar or winch which is probably a bit more of a costly option. Bar looks like it is made for Warn as it has a big W cut in the top of it.

Stage1V8 Stag 4x4 is over other side of town, I shall see how Richard goes with things first, he seems a good bloke and fairly obliging so far. But thank you, I have kept the details.

32's will fit easily enough with a 2inch lift & a camel cut..........ie a triangle cut on the rear guard to stop fouling

you'll need to protect that winch motor as i think youll find the end casing is only ali and won't take bashes very well. Also youll be constantly drowning the winch in any puddle, hole or river crossing so you will need to constantly clean it.

edit -

you can see on my one i tried to keep it up as high as possible and you can see on my bash plate pressed on mud, this is what will happen to your winch if you dont cover it somehow and it only takes a rock in the mud.

I have possibly found another bar that the winch MIGHT fit up inside thus raising it up maybe 250+mm, will have to do some measurements to check. Then ditch the ARB bar.

The ARB bar is not physically wide enough in the back to take this winch up inside due to the zig zag things on either side I guess crash protection sort of things so the majority of the winch hangs below it.
