Recovery Eyes? Where to buy.

I'm in the process of building my winch bar, got my metal cut the other day and will be welding it tomorrow.

I am thinking of mounting a couple of towing points like the one's in this thread:

Where do I buy the eye sections? I am assuming they go through the plate and have a threaded end?

I know where to get the shackles.

What are your thoughts on this type of recovery point versus the standard tow hooks?

Depending on where you are try Cookes.
They seem to have or are able to get most recovery gear

Nut and Bolt, often seen on the front of Trucks, they have them through there front bars as tow points.They screw into the front of the chassis rails, could try Transport Wholesalers, they usually stock all that big truck stuff. Not sure if there rated for Snatching thats all.

Found the Cookes website, looks like they will have what I need.

I wonder if it is worth welding the front of the eye bolt as well as bolting it at the rear, just for a bit of extra strength.

Or will this weaken the eye bolt due to the heat from welding?

Most of the pics I have seen of this type of tow point aren't mounted anywhere near the chassis rails, they are just fastened to the winch bar. The ones in the thread I linked to on the GQ are too high to be near the chassis rails.

They are threaded and are available in heaps of different sizes.
Best bet is to shoot in and talk to them with regards to your needs.(if there is a branch handy )

Invercargill is only 30 minutes away so I will get down there next week.

Hopefully they will know if they are rated for snatch recoveries.

dont weld them just use rated bolts and flat washers,the good eyes are usually rated high tensile so welding them isnt needed,i have got these from cooks and also ramset stores. they are used on building sites and roofs for adding safety lines for harnesses and absiling

I ment they screw through the bumper and into the chassis rails of BIG trucks. eg.Mack,Scania,Volvo,International etc.

From my understanding most Eye Bolts won't withstand the shock loading that goes with 4wd recoveries, they are designed as anchor points. Another thing to consider is when stuck the towing point is in most cases under water or deep in mud and for a quick recovery a hook is the best and quickest option, who wants to be Tit's deep in mud or water trying to get a shackle pin started, and when the pin gets dropped while your vehicle fills up with water while waiting for someone else to find another shackle .

ARB sell them but mainly for attaching the hook in a double line pull or similar, not recommended for snatching...

I may put hooks on the side of the bar, maybe a little bit lower so they sit more or less in line with the top of the chassis rails.

Got the central box section all welded up today and mounted. Just need to get some round bar bent up for the sides and then pull it all off again for paint.

Don't worry Fitzy, most of them will be out with their cameras taking pictures and you'll find it's you tit's deep in mud. You know how it goes I'm getting some in Oz in July, for putting snatch blocks on when winching and also the hook when not in use to free up a towing hook. They all use them in Oz for winching from. I suppose I'll see them in action and how they work on my up coming trip to Cape York.

At the recomendation of Cookes, they are not allowed as recovery points in Winch Challenges in NZ. Cookes told us they are not suitable for that purpose due to side loading and also if they are not mounted correctly, they can be very dangerous.
I use to use them but have taken them off!

So great idea but the guys that supply them don't recomend them on a 4x4 so you decide!

I've decided to put one 4.75 ton rated eye bolt on the front for straight pulls/recovery's and to attach the cable hook to when not in use. I will also put a rated snatch hook either side of the central box section holding the winch and will recover from both at the same time using a short strap and shackle or similar. I figure it will always be better to have the recovery forces spread evenly over the whole bar and both chassis rails as opposed to just pulling from one side.

it is very handy to have something like that for towing or linking trucks together during big river crossings or something. No good for snatching. You really want a hook mounted the right way up for snatching and a shackle point for when you want a rope fixed so it doesnt float off or fall off when it goes slack.

Good point but it is important people understand the difference.
