Knock, Knock, who's there?

Post by marmel »

Noticed over the last week there is a bit of a knocking noise coming from the front end, mostly when turning.

I've had the vehicle for a couple of months (LWB GQ) and since then have put 33's on and done a 40mm bodylift.

I guess anything that was half worn would have been put under a bit more pressure when the bigger rubber was fitted and is now failing.

Could it be the CV's? I've had a look underneath and there is nothing that is obviously loose.

2wd, haven't tried it in 4wd. It's most noticable at slower speeds.

Does it do it while staionary and turning lock to lock? Old Safari did this, and Cruiser does it now.

If it does it while staionary, you can possibly find it by having someone turn the wheel while you check it out underneath.

Mine is coming from the tie rod

Doubt youll hear any noise from CVs unless in 4wd, Mine knocks when going around a corner at slow speed, suspect its the front trailing arm bushes.can feel it through the floor, somebody else posted this problem a wee while back.Ended up being loose body mount bolts. Given the bolts a tweak after doing the body lift and driving it for a while?

I will have a look at the body mount bolts but as they are all nylock I can't imagine they have come loose after 3 weeks.

I suspect it is probably one or more of the bushes, might have to get it up on a hoist and have a decent look.

seems pretty common after a body lift, my last three gq's have done it. it can be cured, usually feels like its under you feet.

It is most probably the chassis end trailing arm bushes. BUY GENUINE NISSAN bushes they are the best. If the problem still occurs try putting another washer on before the big nut

I've only had Radius arms give that problem, never trailing arms, especially if it's coming from the front end.

Body mounts are def. worth starting with though

I'm guessing you notice it a lot more when the road is wet?

Body mount rubbers are stuffed so tightening the bolts won't do anything. Replacing the rubber mounts is the solution but I'm guessing once you see the price and work out that you need 8 (or 10 if LWB) then you'll put up with the knock.
There are about 3 or 4 different types of bodymounts on GQ. They have a thin rubber piece that is what stops them moving about and when that wears out you end up with metal on metal and they move causing the knocking noise. Eventually the knock will stop and that is when the steel part of the body mount has completely worn away. Then it is just the rubber around the bolt holding it in place. At this stage the flex will cause the body to tear around the body mount.
I thought hard about getting a thin rubber (from Para rubber) eg about 1mm thick, to fit in to stop the mount slipping about. Didn't do it as sold the truck and the new one is solid mounted with no rubber mounts at all. (don't do that unless doing complete truck modification as it will tear the truck apart!)

Also radius bushes are likely tired. Chassis end flogs out pretty quick once the truck is lifted. The axle end ones have a habit of ripping the crush tube out of the rubber. This is good for offroad peformance but mean they knock when on road.
Nissan Terrano coilovers, turboed VH45, Safari axles, and some other stuff.

IFS vehicles have steering stops which can make the noise you are describing at full lock. Easy to fix though if you have a look in behind the front wheels you will see the stops, just stick a heap of grease on them.

I have had 3 Terrano's and a Surf, all of them made this noise at full lock.

hey darin, i know you would have put alot of thought into doing the rigid mounting of the body, if you know all the problems associated with doing this cracking body/breaking screens etc can i ask why and what you hope to achieve.. is it common practice in the comp scene or ''development'' on the new truck?
