What to take

Post by dazza85 »

Hi All,
Isn't this a great site !!

What would you all recomend that one should have onboard when going off road ??
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

There are the basics such as fire extinguisher, shovel/spade, first aid kit, tow/snatch strops, basic tools, the list goes on, and other may add to it, but these are just some of the basics.

One of the first things you may want to do is get rated hooks on your vehicle.

Can't answer that. Carry a snatch strop or snatch rope - if its rated and tested then neither is probably better than the other. Carry also a tow strop or a tow rope... once again, personal preference. I prefer strops because they are easier to pack down into a small space (and in the MU thats all I got :P)

Just make sure the vehicle is prepped... ie, as mentioned: hooks, rated, properly mounted front and rear. If you are not sure get an engineer to look it over or even fit them for you.

Inside, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, shovel, bog paper, strops, ropes, toolkit, blanket to lie on if you need it (or under if you get stuck for the night :P), spare mince pie in the glovebox... and at the very least one of those cheap 2 or 3 tonne hand-pullers... with patience you can extract yourself from a messy situation with one of those - rtust me - I know.

All common sense stuff once you've been out a few times, but better to ask first if you're new to it :) Nothing funnier than dad standing beside the new shiney 4WD in a hole, grumpy wife and screaming kids still inside... he's standing there trying to figure out how to use the hand puller she bought him for xmas after buying the new Landy discovery... so try out your gear and be good at using it BEFORE you go out. Or people will laugh at you

spare mince pie in the glovebox...

Steve

Seen heaps of broken straps lying in the mud along Thompsons track but never a broken rope so I now use a stretchy rope - 12t (but yes bulky to store :( )

For the North Island use Spare bacon and egg pie

Beware where you let flares off... I know someone who set a few hectares of scrub alight with one...

You're not supposed to be using your 4-bie to go raid the neighbours 'crop'

Nah seriously Guys, what do you all carry for day trips and extended trips??? Can you get yourself out of the shit and repair your vehicle.
I carry the following for day trip:
2nd set of dry warm clothes
Dry Boots
Warm and wet weather gear
First aid kit
fire extingusher
20m & 10 m rope
10 m snatch strap ( for pig safarais and landcruisers/prados)
tirfor & 20m wire rope & 30 m extension strap
snig chain and various shackles & snatch block
shovel & axe
air compressor
full tool kit
basic spares ( belts, 2nd batery, various nuts & bolts & tyre valves, hey Matt)
food and water and beer.
snow chains ( winter and serious traction problem trips)

For extended trips the list is endless and inclusive of the above, and especially fuel. On the xmas trip I carried everything for 9 days including 80 litres of fuel. The trick is to get the right good quality gear and make sure it has two uses. Include spare oils and spare parts on real out of the way trips. I know people me included that carry spare hubs, wheel bearings, half shafts, alternators  starters etc. I am thinking of strenghtening the bonnet to take my weight when I walk on it and to mount a long handled shovel and pick on it. Many times I have needed a pick and haven't had one, and the shovel can reah right under the truck to keep me somewhat clean.

With all that gear Al, you'd need a trailer to store it
I have enough trouble with the basics :(
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

i think you can carry far too much crap... more crap more weight easier to get stuck. i carry 4 ice breaker chains, fire ex, first aid kit, basic tools socket set . i 12m tow rope 1x 6m bungy and 1 15 t bungy 2 shackles . i wear gumboots fleece pants and fleece jersey. they are so easy to dry.. i have decided that less is better, i took out the back seat and put all my heavy stuff right behind the front seats . i reckon that weight behind the rear wheels on tthe 4wd severly hampers hill climbs and descents. keep the weight central and dont go alone. you wont need so much gear.

It may be the australian in me who has been in the desert for months or all those years as a boy scout, but being prepared for anyhting = survival. I have been on trips where all the gear is used, mostly by other people who carry nothing but a strop that breaks on the first pull. You would be surprised at how all that will fit in my terrano. Would be a real pisser to find yourself high in back country, with the arse of your truck hanging over the edge, and not being able to rescue it because it was home in the shed to save a little weight.

Oh I forgot the 5ton bottle jack and high lift

Adam, the alternator takes up little room in the back, it's all the chains, ropes/strops etc needed to recover Toyota's that weighs the old Terrano down

Yeah, those pusher strops are much heavier than the standard pull ones everyone else uses

I can laugh about that... theres a pic of the MU using one on here somewhere :P
