Toyota Diff Experts??

Post by GotFlex »

hey
im after a bit of help, for starters i brought a lokka and went to fit it to my 8" hilux 4.8 diff, however after setting it all up to spec the carrier touched the pinion, i have now found out that i have a front hilux small 4.8!! so ive found a 4.8 4 spider in a V6, will this fit my locker??

2nd question, i have a LJ71 Hi Pinion 4.8 up front, will the 80series landcruiser hi pinion with the vacume locker fit my ring and pinion from the LJ71?

finally has anyone done a vacume to cable locker
on the cruiser diffs? hence why i want to go the 80s front diff set up,

Any help appreciated!!!!!!

Have a look at this web site. And read it carefully.

http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

The FACTORY 4.88 V6 diff is unique!
- Axle code G144, white pinion paint code,
- generally came in 92-95 trucks/4runners with V6, auto tranny, 31" tires, and tow package.
- Housing offsets pinion towards ring gear, allowing ring gear to be thinner
- OEM Toyota gears are the ONLY gears that fit this diff due to the thinner ring gear. All other gear sets have thicker ring gears and do not fit.
- The carrier (case) is the same as the V6 diffs, so normal V6 lockers, LSD's, etc. will work in this diff

Case in point.

I have a Factory rear electric locker in my KZJ78. 4.3 ratio.
Wanted to move to 4.88.
Scored a front and rear diff from a LJ71 or something.
Plan was to swap out front.
And swap ring and pinion over into my factory locker.

Front was fine.
Rear.....the ring gear is thinner on the factory 4.88
Which if I wanted to use it in my locker would need a spacer under it.
Was gunna cost a bit to setup and a weak point.
So sold off rear diff as a whole unit and got a set of gears in from the States.

The front will probably be the same.
Need to put them side by side and measure thickness of ring gear.

Sorry, you guys are correct, i ment to say electric,

So i read the website u gave me, and if im reading it right, the diff i can score from a v6 auto surf 1993ish will fit my locker but is weaker? the one im looking at is a 4spider,

is there a normal 4.88 that is bigger than my front small 4.88 that is from other vehicles?

What the hell is a turbo 4cyl? diesel?? i hardly ever see them on pirate??

Another website to look at and compare thickness of ring gear.

http://www.gearinstalls.com/harry2.htm this one is a rebuild of an 80 series front hi pinion 8" e locker probably like the one you want to fit.

If you dial up http://www.gearinstalls.com he has a list of others.

Pictures say a thousand words.

You can look at your LJ71 std diff ring and see if it is similar.

If there is a differance it probably will be in the 8 to 12 mm range like my rear one.

Have fun.

The V6 / Turbo diff has bigger bearings than the std 4 cyl diff and is also used in the diesel 4cyl.

As far as I know 2.4TD prados (LJ7#'s) run 4.88 diffs in either auto or manual. The 3.0TD prado's (KZJ7#'s) run 4.3 diffs. 4.88 are axle code G19# and 4.3 are axle code G28#. the # indicates whether its got an open, LSD or 2 pinion or 4 pinion carrier. All 8" toyota diffs are interchangable except for the e-lockers which requires housing modification. Depending on the carrier (normally LSD) axles may have to be cut around 5-10mm shorter to fit in the front and I have had to cut rear axles out of an LN130 surf to get an LSD to fit in the factory open housing, and Yes the open axles were longer.

As for Kbushnz's post, regarding the factory 4.88 V6 diffs I have found this not true if the diff is a factory 4.88 e-locker out of a prado. I have the rear end (LJ7#'s) that match's Tim's (hosehustler) front diff he put in his surf. I am planning to swap in 4.56 gears to match the ratio my trucks got at the moment. The 4.88 crownwheel and pinion are the same thickness as the 4.56, 4.3 and 4.1 V6 diffs I have at home. My theory on this is that while toyota made a specific housing for the 4.88's as the carrier is the same they didn't when it came to the rare e-lockers.

hope this helps marc
