part time 4wd conversion kits

considering doing this to my 80 series. what are the pros and cons of doing this, where to get it from and what brand. i am going to aussie at end of june so will look over there. marks do 1 for about $500 but seem to be a few different ones on the market over there. any feed back on this would be great.

I think there is only one kit which is the marks kit the rest are just sold on behalf or something???

I would ditch the hubs that are supplied (or get the kit with just the spool) and get factory AISIN hubs which come off a solid axle hilux...

I've done the poor mans part time which is the aisin hubs which cut out the slop from the drivetrain, noticed more power and response. Handling was a little different, with fulltime it would tend to run wide when on the power...

Also you can do skids.....

Hi guys iv just brought a 80 and have been looking into these kits i read that if the 80 has ABS you can not fit these kits as the sensor in on the cv not the hub any one no of this cheers scott

mine is a 93 fzj80 4.5 petrol/ lpg injected system ill do some research and ill be back does you truck have center diff lock switch aswell as the front and rear switch and yes mine engages when the low box is selectedmmmmmmmmm cheers boys

What about the change to the slightly electronic controlled auto in 92. Does that also mate up with the viscous transfer case that has no centre diff lock button? Think it just has the high low lever?

Rito my truck is a 93 and it has got ABS it has no center difflock switch.
I have been talking to Marks 4wd in oz today the heavy duty kit they do for 585 oz money incs hubs center difflock switch and spool cheers for the help

Im not saying the AVMs are any good im just saying whats in the kit they recon they have fixd the problem but if you have tryd the new hubs and have smashed them well i gess they no good they do say not to put the standard AVMs on a locker diff

ok ill make this as painless as possible for you...

yours is 93 so it will NOT have ABS as that came out on the 96 model and you WILL have the button on the dash for locking the centre diff which when you fit the part time spool to the trasfer case that button then becomes you 2wd-4wd

there is nothing else that has any relevance to the part time kit at all for your vehicle.

Ive seen shite loads of 93-94 model 80's with ABS and without the centre diff lock button and below is some info i had on the comp when researching them a while ago.


1993-1994

■Introduction of 16" wheels.
■Rear axle changes to full floater with disk brakes when equipped with ABS
■Also gets viscous coupling HF2AV transfer case versus
non-viscous HF2A transfer case for drum braked 80's (and fj80's)
■Introduction of 4.5l 24 valve motor.
■Front and Rear factory lockers become an option.

( The center diff lock switch was standard on 1991/1992 80 Series Land Cruisers. With the introduction of the 1993 year model with full floater axles (with disk brakes), the switch was omitted, however the wiring harness is present. Adding this switch will enable you to lock the center diff in high range. Removing an electrical plug on the transfer case will also give one control in low range. )

Marks Adapters from Australia has a kit to convert 1991-1997 trucks to part time 4WD. With 1993-1997 models this requires removing the viscous coupler in the transfer case. You will also loose your ABS in 2WD.

So at A$585 this gives about NZ$880 when you include exchange rate, freight and GST, hope the AMV hubs are good.

if you ask a question you normaly get good constructive information from people who have been there done that like me i have fitted more than one part time kit and have a few clues about stuff. if you choose to not listen then thats your buzz i guess and all the information gets withdrawn. no toys thrown as my toys are a tad expensive to replace . in fact i learnt something from you and that was there are early model 80's with ABS (why you would want ABS in a 4x4 eludes me)so MY knowledge base has increased. unfortunatly for you yours obviously hasnt and you have just limited your knowledge base to draw from should you have any other questions...but you wont because your book should answer everything you ever need to know eh

and i go to the garage again because thats where i do my best work

I like to listen to all info but had to tell you twice it had abs as a engineer by trade and built the od truck myself i two do good work in the shed but i no i do not no it all and do not pretend to so i think im off to the shed now to where all kiwi 4x4s should be on a friday night Cheers

In meantime am i correct in thinking if we put a switch in for centre diff lock it will lock the transfer up when activated?

I think there may be variances on when the changes occured depending on the country they were being sold in.
