SWB Safari sliding window replacement

Usual story with the SWB Safari's, the frames of the sliding rear side windows rot out.

I have seen some trucks with a one piece glass replacement window with no frame, just a rubber seal around it.

Has anyone come across a source for those in NZ??

What about replacement frames, anyone found a good source for them??

dont know who exactly did it, but a mate got his both replaced couple years ago, cost him $400, and was just through an auto glass shop, as far as i know was just cut to fit, nothing special

What he said ^^^ Most Glass shops can do it, Glassy said to me couple hundred for glass and theyll run some universal rubber around it.

Its a wagon though so you should be able to tint those windows as dark as you want, or remove them. I have seen one with wood in there on trade me (which made me decide to sheet metal it) and it was getting warrants so maybe your warrant guy was being picky.

Will look into it a bit more as I can only see out one anyway due to my seats so I don't see an issue, but then I don't give warrants out either

What did you do with the stuff you had in there, out of interest? :P

It is totally 100% legal to replace the rear side windows with alloy, steel, plastic etc etc

But if you are going to use something like Lexan Polycarb, you gotta have the right grade apparently, scratch resistant or something.

Mudslut on here just wnet through that with his Samurai that has just been re-vin'd. Thats a solid piece of alloy in there.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was pretty sure it was legit due to the tinting rules and visibility, but hadn't actually looked into it

your wof guy has the right to ask for it to be certed. If you happen to drive into someone and its not certed you may have issues.
Why not use perspex or soething see through, i find it hard enough to drive when mine are covered in mud

If I drove into someone I don't think they would be worrying about me looking out the back windows  I get what you mean though.

Idea was I'm going to throw some hooks/clampits/jack mounts and crap on there to hold other crap and such, and also never have to worry about it breaking.

No he doesn't have the "Right" to ask for it to be certed, it is not WOF related in any way.

Went and had a chat to a window place today. $200 to $250 to do the whole job drive in drive out, per side, so $400 to $500 all up.

Thats a lot of coin for some glass and some rubber. The glass being the expensive part i guess.

So that got me thinking, there's nothing wrong with the existing glass, has anyone tried getting a window place to cut one of the panes down to get rid of the overlap, sealing the join and fitting them to a universal rubber edging.

I think the catch might be that the standard glass is to big all round to fit inside the of lip on the body work.

The existing glass fits the hole, so that would probably work or find somebody in the trade and get the glass for cost or near too. I tought about getting a Aluminium Joiner to make up alloy sliders instead of the steel ones, cos it is handy having the rear windows slidable..(that a word?)

it is wof related, if the wof officer believes you have modified something that is no longer factory on your vechicle and it may make it unsafe for road use he has the right to ask for a cert.

cheers for the constructive comment. Very helpful to give so much detail for others.
Next time i'm failed for uncertified tints or stickers or what have you on the back of my wagon i'll just say "yes ok, sure" and roll my eyes. I'm sure it will make the guy pass me.

Nope, you just go to another place to get tested, the mechanic doing the test is obviously a tool. (hahaha, tool, get it?? anyways....  )

Based on your profile below, you lack credibility:

You are a don't own a Nissan, and are best mates with petefjwomansweekly40. My guess is you are here to post dribble and shit and turn another good thread into crap.

Your contribution to this thread is no longer required.

Back on topic, the rest of everyones input has been valuable !!!!!!

Juz reckoned the rear glass fits inside the lip of the body work, so will make some further enquiries about that.

I think the dog would miss the sliding windows the most

Cheers for that, I do happen to own a nissan and am interested in this. I have been doing research about it and its legal requirements but am yet to talk to a cert officer about it. Apart from your word which I'm sure is fantastic and full of info you have offered no document to explain why is doesn't require a cert. I would be oh to happy if that what the case but am looking for some evidence because unfortunatly you will not be the one giving me a wof.

I will PM with futher as I have no interest in turning the thread into an aruguement.

Got to agree with you on that one Justin. Too hot in summer in central otago plus the boys love having them open with mud flicking through them. I'll be interested in a set when you source a supplier to make. Maybe we could get a bulk deal as I am sure heaps of safari owners would prefer them to work like the originally should.

there is NO need for cert, it is either ok or its not

the reasons for this are strength, glass is strong and plastic (most grades) is not and removing the glass weakens the body/ roof crush factor by a LOT. replace with steel, strong=fine, one piece glass= fine correct grade of polly carbonate high impactanti scratch plastic stuff =fine, normal plastic = fail.

clear enough??...get it...clear?? hahhahahaha

but yea if a wof guy wanted to see a cert for a one piece glass or steel replacement then he should grow some balls and go read his book

and yes i did issue a fair few warrants in my time

.....and here, for the second time is the proof, a freshly re-vin'd, yes thats re-vin'd  vehicle with 2mm alloy replacing the windows in the cargo area.

The vehicle is certified for other mod's, which are quite extensive, but did not require the replacement windows to be certed.

Last year there was a panel beater down in Dunedin making some, He had a few on trade me, But I can't find them now, from memory it was $300-$400 a pair for the frames.

Does the vechicle have back seats? I guess this is a matter i should sort out locally with my cert man as things seem to change a lot from person to person.

Good luck

Wopass is right about the glass strength thing.
Ali inserts or similar seem to be all good, least up here they are. But if you want to be able to see out wouldn't it be easy to have some flat glass cut and make a system similar to what the sj tin top zuks have in the rear? Steal some hinges and those clip things from the likes of a mitsi chariot or hatchback of some description and have them fitted on the glass and find some suitable seal rubber. They are real easy to remove if need be and seal replacement is a piece of piss.
Would be heaps cheaper than making up a new slider setup wouldn't it?

I havn't seen what my patrol window sliders look like without glass or rubber so this is just a complete guess.

Swamped, thats also a good idea.Guess it just depends if you want them to open a little bit, like hatchback rear windows or slide right open for the dog to jam his head out, or in Als case to cover the boys in MUD! :D
Might call in the joiners tomorrow and spin a yarn see if its doable(even though selling the Whale)
