Occasional AutoTransmission problem with Surf

Post by Fourbyfour »

I have a problem that occasionally happens to the auto transmission on the Surf (1999 3 litre turbo) when backing up the drive all is fine but on engadging drive once out on the road sometimes vehicle is very slow to respond and needs a lot of accelerator and just pulls away slowly until you get to about 20 km perhour when it suddenly resumes normal acceleration. It is only an occasional problem and most of the time the vehicle accelerates as it is supposed to. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Daniel, thanks for the reply, the transmission fluid looks okay and the level was about 6mm below the full mark, I have topped up but next service I will drain and replace it. I will see if this improves the situation.

Might pay to drop the sump when you service it & replace the filter tank thing & clean out all the residue that will be on the sump.

Not sure if that is a low fluid issue or not, but it's not wise to put any power into it when you don't have any oil pressure as you'll cook the clutch packs in a hurry (we learnt this the hard way  ).
