Hi I am new to 4WD's and just scored a 91 Terrano 2.7td with an auto trans, just wondering when changing from 2WD to 4WD does the trans need to be in neutral? or can it be in drive or 1st or 2nd? and do you change the hubs from 2WD to 4WD after you change the trans?
Cheers

Neutral is the only way to change from 2WD to 4WD with an auto, any other way may do damage.
If you have manual hubs, you can lock/unlock then at any stage you wish, no harm will come of this. It is a good idea to run it with front hubs locked every now and then, just to give the front diff a turnover.
Just don't drive on a sealed road in 4WD, you will run the risk of damage to the drive train.

And dont forget to back your Terrano up for about 10 meters after shifting out of 4wd to disengage the front axles

Only if you have auto hubs, then its only really one wheel revolution required.
