The first time Malcom Higgins , Trevor Ward and my self got a through route to the staircase in the late 90s we called it the Clarke River trip.
When the washout happened no one went through for about 5 years so becuase of the washout I renamed it the Chasm track and nearly everyone uses that name.
I guess some from the old days still call it the Clarke river trip and others call it the staircase. But at the end of the day it doesn't really matter.
I have opened the track twice now and it won't happen again. Someone else can do the work next time and call it what they like.
