Just bought a new Hilux the base model does not come auto freewheeling hubs I didn't take much notice thinking it would have manual hubs but no it doesn't any sort of freewheeling hubs at all is this going to be a problem regards to diesel milage and tyre wear or have things improved over the years and are freewheeling hubs not really nessarary on moden 4 x4's

Surfs have been without hubs, be they manual or auto, since 1989... They just have a locking cap bolted in place.

The ADD (assuming they still give it the same name) unties the long-side (passenger) driveshaft so that the passenger wheel just turns half the half-shaft and the drivers side just turns half the diff.

I've never read any reports on mileage or wear increases by fitting manual hubs, but I would expect it to be negligable.

So are you going to SAS it? :)

You're an evil man
I assume when timbatrader said new he meant brand new! (he did say its a sheep shagger ute) So you want him to cut it up straight away :) Wonder how toyota warranty would like that

If its a new sheep shagger ute I guess it has electric disconnect hubs so the front end wont be turning in 2wd. That's how my new Rodeo works anyway, - and no Steve, put the grinder down, I'm not going to SAS the Rodeo....... :?: although................naa.

Yeah, actually thats a point... the new ones are Prado-based... so they could well have electric hubs...

And why wait to SAS something... it's just going to get dented and rusty anyway :) Dooo eeet nowwww....

Bring your truck down, I have no space in the shed, but in my mission to SAS things, I will gladly do it outside in the rain :P

No ADD on it that only comes on the SR5 models No electronic disconnect like the Rodeo yes it is brand new and shiny so I am guessing I won’t be letting anyone SAS it but excuse my ignorance what is SAS
I have fitted a snorkel have got a winch bar and winch coming going to have to get the grinder out and cut ¾ of the front bumper off to get that on new tyres then I am going to get it dirty and dented but not to the extent you guys do

SAS = Solid Axle Swap... ripping out the IFS (OuterLimits refer to that as IsForShopping ) and fitting a beam axle in its place. Better offroad ability

Shame, I would love to do a new Hilux :)

No ADD on the base model = tight Toyota saving$$$ Bit of a bugger tho ah (excuse the pun)

They don't build 4wds like they used too (crumpy would be turning in his grave)

Viva the Lux 60's :!:

So is it full-time 4wd or do they just roll the front drivetrain with no thought for wear/tear and added consumption? Bloody hell, what has toyota turned into? First this, now that ghastly abomination of a new FJ cruiser... Might buy a nissan...

yeah right!

Just took a break from out the back shed (where I'm melting down sagged Nissan coil springs to make new leaf springs) and saw that. I'm hurt :(

Must take a patrol for a skid offroad one day soon to see if its all true seeing that I've got an HT licence and all.
