Two young members of the Air Force spent a cold 90 minutes clinging to the top of their 4WD as it was stuck in the middle of the Rangitikei River.
A man and woman, both in their early 20s, ended up in the river at the southern entrance of Bulls after their engine gave way and the water's current washed them from the shore about 5.30pm last night, Feilding police sergeant Mike Lawton said.
They had been cruising up and down the water's edge in their Toyota 4WD to clean it. After becoming stuck they climbed out the sunroof onto the top of the vehicle and used their cellphones to call for help as the 4WD became submerged to the top of its doors.
Both are based at Ohakea Airbase and neither wanted to talk after they were rescued shortly after 7pm.
It took Palmerston North's Civil Defence rescue emergency support team three attempts to successfully get a life raft out to the 4WD and bring them to the riverbank.
Mr Lawton said both were cold but otherwise fine.
"I think they are feeling a little embarrassed. They were very lucky as it could have had far more serious consequences, and hopefully it will serve as a stark reminder that the waterways of New Zealand pose a number of dangers and should never be underestimated."
The 4WD was to be salvaged by the owners today.
