Hey there guys,

I've been a lurker for a while here now, but I now have a problem with my trusty terrano.

The starter has started not starting! Every now and they it just wont start. There is no click no nothing, it just wont start. It only has this problem when it is warm and for some reason just rocking the truck back and forward seems to shake something that will let it start again, thankfully it is a manual so have just been crash starting it when it has let me down, but it is rather annoying.

I have a quick look at all the connections and all seems good, and unfortunately when ever it does this I am never in a position where I can take some time to trouble shoot while it is being a problem.

Would really appreciate any hints thought.

Usaly if you can rock the vehicle while in gear and then jump in and start it im guessing the bendex is sticking thats the bit that throws into the ring gear to start it may be if you pull the starter n give it some type of lube/oil it will free it up for you

Cheers for the reply long, that is certainly a possibility, I think I might just pull the starter out and inspect it, it doesn't strike me as the actually starter that is stuffed as when it does crank, it cranks very strong and without hesitation, so your suggestion could be a likely cause.

It looks like a right pain in the ass to get out, any special tools or tips?

IMO I dont recommend using grease on bendex drive as it collects clutch dust and eventually gets too tacky, so I've been told. My Dad would always use graffite powder.
Your problem could be starter motor brushes, as it requires these to be in circuit for the solinoid to work properly. My td27 brushes were corrosion seized into holders. CRC and gentle wiggling freed them, then remove plastic breather bung and weld hose fitting in its place to extend breather up high and seal rest off starter on reassembly.
I've had your starting problem on other vehicles because the brushes have simply worn out.

sound like mine did when full of mud replace bearing and brushes etc while out as their isn't much room to remove the starter I attached a bit of wire so I could get it out past the manifold

I had the same problem with my one, it was the wiring connection between the starter and the cables. I pulled them apart gave them a clean and reassembled again.. That was on a D 21 terrano..
