After some long travel shocks for my 413. Has 1" shackle lift and 2" lifted springs. Any ideas on what works well in this set up? Also what are other guys using to adjust gearing for bigger tyres etc. Cheers

You can use any decent make of over length shock like EFS, old man emu, rancho.if you have used a after market spring you can generally match the shocks to them. What size tyres are you going to use. a good option is to put a 410 transfer case in to lower gearing, it's fast and easy. Or if your budget allows, buy in a complete kit and build a lower geared transfer from the likes of Calmini.

check out outerlimits as there's a cheap mix and match you can do with shocks. part numbers etc are there. One pair is from a hiace i think but can't remember.

becoming hard to find and getting the right one is the key. 84 and onwards bolts in with some small modification. These have the 4wd light plug on them near the gear selector (from memory).

They are snapped up for converting the 413 boxes to rockhopper boxes. I did it a while back and the lower gearing was insane (12% in high and 87% lower in low) - great for rock crawling but not so good for mud. Found on a normal run I was in and out of low range all the time so if I was to do it again I would just fit a 410 t-case and stay with the 12% reduction. That makes 30x9.5's spin nicely and returns gearing to almost stock (could even slip some 31's in there too with that reduction - though this requires some work).

Of course these two "larger" tyre sizes now require cert (bastards)

I still get pangs of annoyance that I sold my 413, should have kept it and got a second car for work - never mind others have enjoyed it too now.

Is there options in regards to changing diff gearing, or are you pretty limited there? New to the game so just trying to find out as much as possible before i get stick in.

Vitara front diff R&P can be used in the 413 housing, but a retainig can is required for correct alignment of the spider gear shafts
Vitara ratios are 5.12 and 4.6
413 ratio is 3.9
Samurai ratio is 3.6

410 and earlier are not compatible

Also apparently some grand vitara and x90 diff heads can be used as well .

A standard 410 transfer is 12% reduction in high range and marginal change to low range.
A rocklobster (combination of 410/413) is a 12% reduction in high and 84% in low range. Also known as 4.16 reduction gears .
Aftermarket reduction gear sets are Aldo available.
To fit a stock 410 transfer you will need to either change the 3 transfer end drive shaft flanges to 410 ones or the transfer case flanges to 413 ones as the bolt spacing is different .

I have rocklobster in my 413. IMO it can't be beat for North Is wheeling. My clapped out , smoking, oil drinking, underpowered boat anchor in my engine bay has no problem spinning the 31's for mud work and can crawl rear slow for the technical stuff.

The mian issue I had with the stock low range gearing was that even in 1st low it would try and runaway down hills requiring breaks to try and keep control. Rocklobster fixed that nicley

Yeah the old transfers are hard to find. I looked for a while and then bought two on the same day so they do turn up. Identifying them can be a mongrel too.
If the big tyres don't protrude from the bodywork you can get a warrant with em on but yeah i think you are MEANT to cert it.
You do have to do a bit of guard work or a body lift to run 31's so if your not into that 29.5 or 30's might be better.
2.5in total lift might fit 31's but they will scrape when flexed up. Firewall is usually the trouble spot.
What area you in?? Someone close might have a set of 31's you could set up beside or maybe try for size.

Hey a mates selling a 84 sj410 ( THE ONE WITH THE PLUG) transfer case.Im pritty sure its had the 413 flanges already done.Its on t/me at the mo for $150 start price,cheap, its up here in Whangarei.His trade me name is robadog.Im going down to the Rotorua winch comp in a couple of weeks and could bring it down if you live between here and there.

Cheers suzookyman. Just had a look on TM. Definetly looks like a good buy. He doesn't seem to be sure whether its 410 or 413 though. I'm in Helensville just out of Auckland.

its a 410, I was going to but it myself but he snapped it up.
