Wanted: Tidy 40 Series Cruiser

Post by smurf182 »

Hi guys,

Finally in a position to buy a nice Cruiser, looking for something that preferably has a lot of work done to it as my fab skills are non existant and I don't have the facilities.

Something like what Fakey on here has just sold is basically what I'm after.

Ideally something with Rego WOF and LVVC, I just want to hand over the cash and drive.

Would also consider a nice 70 series or SASed Surf. Modded 80s are probably out of my price range.

EDIT: Also... maybe.. a TJ Wrangler

Cheers

There was a very well set up FJ40 for sale on TM at the same time as Fakey had his up for same - 12K - V8, lockers, winch, york compressor, cage, soft top, winch etc etc and I'm fairly sure it belongs to Dayal who works at - or used own Gold Coast Mechanics in Paraparaumu (north of Wgnt) (4WD specialists). If it wasn't his they're likely to know of the vehicle as they're likely to have worked on it (see http://www.finda.co.nz/business/listing ... nical-ltd/). I looked in my browser history and the classification appears to have expired so I can't send you a link to the original page.

Hey mate, what sort of coin are you wanting to spend? that normally determines what sort of truck you get with mods etc.
Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

It really depends on the truck in question. I would be inclined to spend more on a nice 40 compared to say a Hilux, just for the novelty value.

I know you have said you want Rego & WOF plus no fab skills but...

Do you have any mechanical skills? or any mates that have played with 350 Chevs? If so I'd be inclined to find out a bit more about below truck - Find out why its got no WOF and what price he'll take for it then work out what an engine rebuild with some performance parts might cost...

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 338905.htm

I like the look of it, and would be a great truck if nothing required for WOF and you have skills to sort 350 out.

Or offer this guy $7k for his truck (as apparently that's what he paid for it 2 months ago):

I can do basic stuff, but rebuilding a motor is way beyond me, unfortunate because that looks like it has a tidy body, winch, FF rear axle, power steer etc.

As for the one in Chch.. I drove past it a couple weeks ago and it is one huuuuge bitch, not so keen on the sprung over aspect.

Just been an had a look at this one this avo, Its been built quite well. Nissan coil setup on standard bj40 diffs with 4 linked rear. The body is a bit rough an has been rolled foward onto the front lh corner. The cage has moved slightly but its pretty solid. Bonnet is stuffed. The motor is very clean with only a minor oil leak from the side cover on the engine. Tyres are pretty worn in the centres.
I wouldnt want to have to re-cert it as there are a few things that wouldnt get thru these days that are on the cert plate

Good news for me is one of my mates is goin to buy it
Really only needs a good body tidy up.

Good motivation for me to get my project moving along

Nah it was a different engine to the 305, it was a stroked replacement for the 283's in the 1960's

Not sure why he has listed it like that - When I bought it it came with a receipt for the engine conversion which listed it as a 350 Chev.

My brother in law thought it looked smaller than a 350 so maybe he is right.

Only thing it really needs is power steering (front locker makes it heavy when in 4wd). Would be good with a bit more lift and some 35-36" aggressive mud tires too. Other than that it is a very tidy truck. I used to get a smile on my face every time I got in it.

Cool - are you going to have a look at it? I suppose if you were interested in the original vehicle then you'll be happy to see it relisted at this price - good luck :-)
