Hello all,
Another newbie here,
well new to this site anyway, ive been 4wding for 12 years and now getting used to internet forums.
currently own a 1992 d/cab hilux-rebuilt 2.8d with surf turbo fitted running 11psi boost,50mm spring lift with 32" maxis buckshots
anyway, im thinking of lowering my diff ratios from factory 4.3 to 4.8 and running a l.s.d in the rear (which it has now) and a locker in the front.
anyone have thoughts on this, or where i might obtain 4.8 crownwheel and pinion sets,or complete diff heads in canterbury?

Done exactly this mod on my fathers vehicle last year, his is the same as yours, getting your gear ratio's on the spot is one of the best mods you can do, and 4.8's is exactly what you need
early 80's nz new hilux's had 4.8's, if you are after something later, hiace vans are a good source for them as well, can't remember exactly which model (years) hiace's have 4.8's  but both diffs we put in dad's were from hiace's, one is an LSD and can tell you that was from a hiace 4x4
here's a link that may help you

P.S you shouldn't have to pay any more than about $200 a piece, wreckers will rip you so don't even bother

Toyo LSDs are well known as weak and worn out/needing reshimming after 30K so don't spend too much for it, better off saving for a locker

Probably got 4.5's as its an RN46... you need NZ new 2 and 2.2 litre petrol (3Y and 4Y) powered *N65's
Got a couple of 4.8's in the workshop - 2 LSDs, one reco'd in a V6 (heavy duty) carrier - but I want too much for it. Other one is in need of a reco.
One thing - Toy LSDs are crap... get an open, and get a locker in it.
Do the 4.88 swap tho, will make a world of difference.
Welcome aboard

cheers for that Steve, wasn't sure so thought i'd better say
Also can confirm that the LSD's don't work that great, even the late model one we put in Dad's truck, with correct oil's etc, isn't the best
go for the lokka's.............hmmmm I know a bloke that sells them

sounds good, thanks for the ideas guys!
supralux, could you supply a lokka for the 4.8 lsd of yours that needs a reco? could you reco it? would a lokka in the rear be noticeable on the road?
mercutio, yes if you could check out your fathers 4.8 diff head, would be good thanks

Just a matter of interest, are you able to fit a (aussie) lokka straight into a LSD carrier? I thourt you can only fit them into a open carrier.

have heard that autolockers can cause w.o.f issues as they can affect the vehicles handling during cornering, so some places want a cert for them.
i was looking through supralux's 4wd stuff ads and it appears he can supply lokkas to suit the toyota l.s.d

RN46 should have 4.88 diffs the R stands for the 18R engine 2.0 PETROL .
