Heim joints

Post by Fakey »

Anybody know where to get heim joints in wellington?
Thinking about using them for suspension links on a road legal 4x4. Any feedback on that idea would be welcomed as well :D

I got a whole bunch off a guy in nelson (via trademe). He also made the weld-in tube insert thingys too which was great as I dont have a lathe. 40 odd bucks each! Chromoly 5/8 heims with spacers and tube insert.

I wouldn't waste your time with heim's for a road wagon. They wear out fast in mud and make knocking noises. I use GQ trailing arm bushes. Flex mint and never wear out. They are also dirt cheap.

Just buy some of the GQ upper arms cause they are cheap and retube them to the desired length

Heims have there place, especialy in tight spots. Johnny Joints are the way to go IMO, as have free movement, have a bit of give for shock loading, and if you get the forged joints then you have adjustment.

turoa, I think terrano rear trailing arms have the same bush as the ones your talking about.

Thanks for the replies guys

I was wondering if the heims would last long. I have a full set of rear gq trailing arms with good bushes, also the 80 diff Ive bought comes with the standard trailing arms. I was thinking of using a heim at the chassis end an the 80 bush at the axle end so Ive got some adjustment, but if Ill have to replave the heims all the time it wont be worth it

KBjj, where can you get Johnny joints in NZ? Im assuming theyre the same as the ones ballistic fab in the US make?http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Ballistic-Forged-Poly-Bushing-263quot_p_1646.html

Fakey.

I bought some re buildable spherical bearings for my buggy build from a guy in Kaitoke. He makes a heap of stuff for stockcars about $50 a unit, fully greasable with nylon bushes. Just weld on some thread and you have a really nice hemi joint. If you want I can track down the guys name. Ive got it round here somewhere.....

Johnny Joints are here http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestore/johnnyjoints.aspx (Then click on Johnny Joints button on left of screen for full list)
Magoos Street Rods are the only NZ agent I know of. sales@magoos.co.nz
I used the 2.5inch joint with 1.25inch threaded stud (CE-9114), supplied with the ball centre with a 16mm hole (CE-91102-16MM)
Not cheap thou, I've just brought a left hand threaded one with bung and jam nut for $165  Just the Forged joint was $110. I believe these will last the test of time. Heres hopeing
