thought mine was an exception, but was talking to nzhunter on the weekend whilst he was driving wopass 80 around the bush and he mentioned the windows were faaarking useless


so got me wondering how many more of you have window issues

mine are shite

in morning when you start up the cruiser, the windows will virtually not move really, unless you give them a helping hand and then you will need two helping hands to get them back up

I've tried silicon on guides after a good cleaning, but it does nothing to help

have noticed that later in the day once vehicle been running for a while, they seem to get better and can sometimes (rarely) move under thier own power

have also noticed first thing in morning whilst clearing dew etc off windscreen that the wipers move bloody slow and will get faster as truck warms up


so do any of you other 80 owners have similar issues and if you if do, have you managed to make it better and how

Mine are crap, have tried all of the above.

I have tints on mine, and it has shown up where it's grabbing causing the slowness.

Seems its in the center of the window where the curve is.

A replacement weather strip seal thingy that sits on top of the door would fix it

BTW, they work mint in the summer when the weathers warm.

I've done quite a bit of sand driving so my window seals aren't the smoothest but I've never had to pull my windows up until recently which I put down to being too sandy, the window is scratched to fawk.

However, I have had a lot of problems with the buttons on my drivers side playing up, not causing windows to do anything or only working going down, then having to reach over and push the window up button on the door itself.


Theres plenty of window problem talk on ih8mud, some thing along the lines of regulators...?

Somebody told me graphite powder in the runners to free up Safari rear windows, work it in then do it few more times.Could be worth a shot?

not an 80 but surf of same era , will very simallar electrics.
I fixed one window by cleaning the switches , another by dust removal from the guides and a third by motor replacment.

Toyota Wiring looms are very knowen to fatige and waer at the door flexi jionts as well.
Measurieng voltage drop at the door motors was how i diagnosed the fualts with my windows.

My old 24V 70 series had electric windows and they worked mint, but I am in the same boat as other 80 series owners, the windows are shite.......(Just one of the many things on my "To do list").

So I would have to agree with UBZ and say it would have to do with voltage drop.

quick way to prove that, hot wire the fukers, give them a direct feed (temp) from the battery and see if it improves the speed.
My Fairmont had the same issue, virtually would not move when cold, pulled the switches out and cleaned them, improved it quite a bit, the siliconed the living snot out of the guides and CABLES, no more problems.

drivers window slow as. but the other three are ok. i have tints on the rear windows only.

drivers window has just started a new fualt, if it run all the way down it cant start to close. i took the inside off and watched it. the window is twisting as the window starts.
was caught out in the rain.

the windscreen wiper yes i laff every time i turn it on for the first time.

Did the same on a vitara door I was stripping yesterday. For memory they were slow when in the vehicle. Went to remove the window glass and of course door is off vehicle (vehicle not near) and the window is up and its needs to be down to undo the 2 nuts holding it to the regulator
Got the jump pack and plugs to fit the motor plug connector. It moved damn fast up and down when getting a direct feed. So yeah voltage drop somewhere....

Crap windows on mine too,Tried the silicone thing windows out and cleaned tracks, hotwire straight to the motor and still no good. Would convert to armstrong power anyday if someone had manual winders... Also can never get the handbrake working good even with new shoes etc

My windows and wipers are the same.was told its because the rubbers are too hard.the handbrake is because it doesn't have a locker on the adjuster wheel.I have to adjust h brake every couple of months because i have manual so i need it .i still don't rely on it for hills just turn it off and leave in gear.pain in a@se because i have immobilizer alarm that i have to beep to restart.Awesome truck but does have some Quirks

Use a steel ruler to clean the crap out that sits just below the dust seal on the door, or pull the seal off and clean it out.
The only time the wipers (and everything else electrical for that matter) were really slow was when the intake heater was on after cold startup. Takes a few minutes before it turns off.

yeah bro you need to disconect that intake heater( crap wipers when cold?) had mine off for 2 years now,no problem starting when cold,got caught out once when taking my truck when cold to the boat ramp and then turning it off, that little heater had sucked enuff juice from the batteries that it wouldnt start again! watch your voltmeter in the morning when its cold it probably stays down below 12 volts for a period of time before the intake heater times out,then the voltmeter jumps up............as for the windows its an 80 trait..........

wopass was saying its something to do with the shape of the glass and the rubbers. Apparently the glass in the doors of an 80 have a slight curve, and when its cold the rubber around them becomes stiff restricting movement but alas when it warms up the rubber becomes softer allowing room for the window to go up......
sooo hmmmm door heaters?! haha.

It sure made going through the maccas drive thru for breakfast an epidemic
