Kool old side valve engine!!! What size is it??
If it has valve stem seals, do those also
I have the same issue with a 1955 S1 L.R in the shed, rings, bearings and seals for the win

Not totally a side valve, these are called an "F" head, they have the exhaust valves as side valves in the block and the inlet in the head as overhead valves. The F heads where used in the early Land Rover engines, no wonder Richards eyes lit up

In answer to your question Warren, I dare say the old girl has done a few miles and if I remember correctly was off a farm so maybe a lot of idling around this combined with a few years sitting around during the rebuild means it's time for a rebuild.
My advice would be, pull the pistons, have a good look at the big end and main bearings if the shaft looks OK then shout it a new set of bearings, measure the bores and if not to bad just give it a light deglase hone, take the pistons into Cliff Bonds, have them check them, maybe blow them up a couple of thou and re drill the oil ring lands for oil control rings, they will know what to do. Give the valves a good grind and set the tappets, a new set of seals and gaskets and the old girl will be like new.
AND WHATS WRONG WITH BEING SMOKEY,
FITZY.

Hi Fitzy
Last I heard of you , you were relaxing on a river in Europe.
Just been replacing Valves, quides and seats in my 1949 1600 F/head.
Totally different looking motor to the one in the picture.
Cheers Richard
