replacing just the rings on a diesel?

is this considered OK as i really dont/cant afford a rebuild and rings are only 130 to my door off ebay. can do the work myself but is it worth it?

What engine? How many Ks?
Depends how worn the bores an pistons are an if it has removable liners.
Also what makes you think the rings need replacing?
If the rings are worn has this been caused by tired injectors washing the bores causing the rings to wear prematurely. You may need to get the injector nozzles serviced at the same time (Or at least checked out) or you may be just wasting your time

Yep, just done it on my 3B 70 series, checked for wear in bores, Honed and new rings.

245km 4d56-t not sure about the engine condition as i havnt had it apart but i got a 420 psi on each cylinder for compression test which is good but am getting massive amounts of blowby through oil cap and dip stick pops out, so much blow by its consistently finding new places to punch through weak gasket seals and ive had enough!

I would say most certinally give it a hone.

Being a Mitsy, it'll probably have a fair bit of wear in the bores.
But you could be lucky in getting away with just a hone and re-ring.
My suggestion is to use a parallel hone rather than a bog brush. The parallel hone will do a much better job.

Shit, don't bother re-ringing it then!!!!!! Thats good even compression!!!!!!

You want to make 100% sure that your crankcase ventilation system is working properly first.

The only reason it should pop the dip stick out is if the ventilation system is blocked, even if the engine is completely rooted

Make sure you can freely blow into the engine through the crankcase breather hose as a start.

Make sure the hose isn't blocked or kinked when its connected up.

Run around with the hose off for a bit and see if it fix's the problem??

It just seems odd that its not dumping clouds of blue smoke, or impossible to start in the morning and completely dead and gutless, but its loosing enough compression past the rings to blow the dipstick etc out.

Its not logical.

yeah it doesnt blow smoke and like you say how its hard starting i was fine when it had a leak but once i fixed the leak it got alot harder to start so maybe your right about the blockage havent looked but will try that and let ya know, last thing i wanna do is spend money that i dont need too! thanks for the insight dieselboy!
