A few G16A Questions

engine: G16A, 8 Valve, Carby, Vitara.

in a couple of months I want to take the head off, have it checked over, put new rings in and generally do a really good service, such as cambelt too. Just wondering would it be necessary to change the oil pump and water pump? thinking so as engine will have done close on 300,00km at that point. also will I need to have the block honed?

and is there any point in getting the head ported a bit too? think I may as well get some more power, or at least economy. New valves too? and new cam? or just stick with the above?

Is there anything i should look out for too? things that get worn and so on?

Finally if I have to get a new head would it be better to get genuine Suzuki or an after market brand? Head gasket hasn't gone yet, or head, so the work is more just to reduce the chance of it happening.

Cheers
Lincoln

Okay. if you are going that far with new rings then why not new bearings too, after all you are going to have to take the pistons off the crank anyway. and if you are going that far do the main bearings and seals too.

Get a new water pump (you are going to have 4 more bolts to take it off when you do the cambelt so do it now while its all in bits. Oil pump (personal choice) if you do the bearings why not, but depending on how its running get it checked prior (someone will bung a gauge on it for you) and make a decision then.

While the head is off get the valve seats, springs and seals done. Didn't do this on my ute and shouldve. It burned oil through leaking valve seals, but only when cold and it dripped into the cylinder (was intermitant) was it visible (smoked like a bastard). Not sure if porting is a good use of money but you could get the manifolds and head matched so they flow better, but this isnt a high performance machine so may not be a good use of your dollars. Of course others may argue otherwise. Maybe get the exhaust side tidied up so it flows better so heat is removed better (less chance of a buggered head), but again the improvement will probably be marginal with just a carb. Maybe use the $$$ you save on porting and polishing to get a TBI manifold and wire that in. :?

Basically for the work you are thinking of doing maybe just get an older engine, rebuild that (get everything done - fully recond) and then drop it into your wagon. Then sell the old engine.

Of course that's just my opinion and it's worth 3/5ths of Feck all.

with all the money you will spend to do that (unless you can do it yourself) you might want to think about just picking up a newer motor done low km's and just chuck a new waterpump and cam belt on it. just a thought hope it goes well for ya

Thanks heath, Need to do some thinking now. this has the possibility of blowing way out of proportion.

and y60 I will do the work myself, or as much as I can and get help with the rest. I want to learn about this type of stuff so the best way is to do it.

I may just get another engine and do all the work on that instead. That way I can still drive it instead of it being parked up in the drive way.

Need a f*cking garage
