Supra Surf Basket-Case

Post by U-BOAT »

have just picked up someone elses unfinished project, an 88 independant surf with 5m supra motor. all it needs to run is wiring, or so i am told. have just got it tonight so havent put a battery and turned it over yet. Last owner rekons he had it turning over but couldnt figure out how to wire in the computer. Havent decided what im going to do with it yet, mainly got it so i can put the body onto my mates 2.8 turbo diesel beam axle surf. But would like to get the motor going before the body comes off so i know whether the motor is any good or not and whether it shuld be kept for an upcoming project.. It also came with a complete spare head. Any help eg wiring diagrams, exlpanations of things i may or may not have on top of the motor to make it run, like the AFM?? etc I will upload so photos so anyone else can have a gander at the thing. Also i think it has the manual supra belhousing.

cheers U-boat

2- or 3-plug computer? Supra had the 2-plug and Cressida had the 3...

Hey Steve

Yup i checked out the computer and it has two plugs, one big and one small. I chucked a battery in the thing and got lights windows etc working, so turned the key to see if it turned over and only got the starter solenoid clicking, and nohting else happening, so might have to take the starter off and have a look at it. Could be best to have a look at the wiring done so far as i have noticed some house wiring in the engine bay.

Then the wiring is simple, check http://www.4wd.net.nz and the supraswap info that Mike has posted there... theres a wiring diag for the 2-plug comp on there.

Keep up posted, and for gods sake take pics... we need pics :)

Is there some way to hook up electric fans to the temp sensor so they will run automatically?
Mine is on a seperate switch that I keep forgetting to turn on

You really want a separate thermal switch (cheap from auto sparkies, Repco, etc) and mount it in the radiator itself... then use that to trigger a relay that runs the fans - and do it independant of the ignition circuit so that even after the engine stops and the key is out the fans can cool the rad - at least thats how a lot of cars I've had have worked... my little Hyundai overheats occasionally and the fan runs for 5 minutes after I shut the key off when its got hot.

hardest bit will probably be having to remove the rad and get a threaded insert braized or soldered into the rad tank... might pay to ask an auto sparky or a radiator whizzo before buying anything tho... or go to the wreckers and find a rad that will fit, thats got on mounted in it already...

to test it just take the switch out, hook it up to a multimeter then dunk the switch in a pot of water... boil it up and see if it switches on/off with the water temp... Assuming the fans will be set to come on before 100*C...

Steve

PS: Having said all that, I ran 1, then 2 (then 1 again cos one broke) A/C pusher fan from the supra I got the engine from, and it only ever got warm once, that was the height of a very hot day in summer, slow-crawling over the riverbed of the Ashley... I used to be able to drive mine around with no fan at all, no problem as long as I kept moving over about 20km/h... was a very cool-running engine.

Mine has Cressida radiator fitted, with one 12 inch pusher fan. went for a trip up local river on the weekend and the temp sat on about 80 for most of the time but as soon as the motor had to work a bit the temp leapt to 100 and it took ages to drop. I parked it in the river a few times to cool it down. Will go see auto elec this arvo and see what the options are.

are you sure its a pusher and not a puller running backwards or something silly like that? They are very very inneficient running that way.

The a/c fans are only about 8"... and as I said, mine was all good 99% of the time running just one of them.

Maybe you need a radiator flush?

I'm going to flush it all today, have put a new thermostat in and I'm going to gp pick up 2 10inch Supercheap pusher fans for $90. Will see about temp. sensor at the same time.

I'm pretty sure supercheap have a kit that does the temp-sense thing... not sure on price... would be worth stopping at an autosparky on the way for a second opinion...

Good luck, post pics, tell the story

I have this engine in mine, I fitted 2 (forgotten sizes) push fans and works really well, mine are from AE90 toyota trueno/corolla/sprinter, they only have one but I found two quite easily, they are a common fan and have about a 2 inch shroud and are easy to mount
shouldn't cost $90 slides either
I hate signatures
