funny noise whining up front 1kz-te auto and manual

Post by Heath »

Doesnt that say it all.

From the time I bought my wagon I have had an intermitant noise coming from somewher around the rear of the engine/gearbox. I got a new clutch and figured that with new bearings (sounded like a bearing whining) it would go away. It didnt. Now its not there all the time (never was) and for a while I thought it was in the gearbox, because when I pushed the clutch it it went away. Of course when I pushed the clutch in I removed my foot from the gas pedal too.

Was reading as you do the copious amounts of crap online and came across a gem of info that may be the problem on a yankee website. Intitially it was described as a noise in an auto wagon (so I didnt pay much notice), but a manual driver said that he had the same noise and would check his - same thing and problem solved.

It seems that on the return line from the fuel pump there is a small spring and ball bearing (under the banjo fitting or somewhere like that). This spring can weaken and allow the bearing to vibrate, which then reaches a harmonic point and makes a sound not unlike that of a bearing whining. This is present in Auto's as well as manuals.

So next time my wagon made the noise I kept the revs constant and depressed the clutch. Bugger me the noise didnt go away and stayed constant with the engine revs. Yay!!! Now I dont have to rebuild my gearbox  , but of course now its an engine noise :? .

Have yet to have it looked at (got to round up some $$$), but if you have an auto or a manual 1kz-te and there is a funny whining noise that sounds like its coming from the front of the gear box/ transmission you may just find it's this thingee and not a bearing after all.

Of course if I am wrong then bugger now I have an engine problem.

There is a Denso part available from DSL in CHCH that we've used to solve this issue. The fuel return valve banjo bolt (fitting in the return line direct on the top of the injector pump) is the part we've replaced. The noise is related to a resonance that develops in the return line due to the valve.
I have the part number for the replacement part at work in my notebook, so I'll have to dig it out tomorrow if you want.

edit: it's a 5min job to replace. Very easy! Basically you replace a banjo bolt. Don't know how much the part is though.

Funny how for ages I couldt'nt find a fix and just like that it's been done before    .

I guess its in how you describe the fault and narrow it down.

Of course this may not be my problem but if I isolate it as a possibility then its one less thing to check.

Yeah if I could get the part number its something to look into. Cheers.

Go the bit.

 $90 incl gst. :?

Hope it fixes the issue for that price.

When I spoke to the workshop guy he said "oh yeah Toyota. The make a funny whine like a bearing going, just replace the return banjo bolt valve. That's caused by the valve resonating."

Seems this is a well known fault but the toyota guys couldnt tell me shite.

With the house empty of gear (found a few tools) for the open homes I cant find the right size bits to do the valve so it will have to wait until I can be stuffed climbing into the storage room and doing a search. :?

Problem seems to have gone away, but I can hear something else (just the valve working I guess). I have to stop listening and turn the stereo up louder    .

Time will tell if that was the problem but so far so good.

Been nearly a month now and the niose has gone.

But...

Its been replaced with another one. Sounds like a vibration and is engine speed dependant and comes from just in front of the fuel tank pass side.

I noticed it when I first got the valve replaced but never really worried about it, untill today when I had the back seat folded up and it was quite loud (and anoying). The back seat must have been masking the sound and I couldnt figure out where it was coming from - till now -maybe. :?

Had a climb underneath and I see the fuel lines run parrallel to each other and are seperated by clips, except in one place where they touch along their length for about 10 inches, have jammed some rubber between them and hopefully thats it sorted.

Still got to have a test drive but I am confident I have it sorted now.
