Hi,

i have a question that hopefully someone can answer :D

Will be purchasing a late 80's 70 series landcruiser SX5 with coil sprung axles, I want to upgrade the axles to 80 series for the extra width and strength im led to believe.
Has anyone here performed this conversion and know how much is involved? My main concern is the steering side of it, not to fussed about cutting and relocating spring platforms etc.

Any advice would be much apprecated

Cheers
Grant

prado 70 and 80 share the same front diff head and steering set up.shoudn't be too much of a problem .might have to shorten your tierod from steering box to kingpin arm thou.80 series has better rear suspension than prado but quite a bit off work to change it over.hope this helps cheers sig

Will be purchasing complete rolling 80s chassis so should have everything there and was expecting to have to lengthen steering tie arm and relocate suspension points etc.
Out of curiousity do you have any experience with the 80s electronic front and rear lockers from factory - are they strong and reliable? Will be fitting the 4.2 turbo with some mods so the strongest option will be my approach. Grant

the factory lockers are good .Just dont put them in under power or you will break off the driving dogs on the carrier.you dont need the computers to run them.there is an easy wiring diagram on the net for them.my 80 has them factory,my 40 has one in the back (been in for about 15 years),and have another one to go into my new project playdoh

Where are you from?

Nathan at 4WD Accessories in Chch has done pretty much this with his red 78 series Prado Ute.
You can see photos of it on the Pucker Park thread.

One axle is a Safari, but we wont mention that!

Give him a call.

I've got a factory locker in the back of mine.
I rebuilt the rear axle twice (1/2 shafts bent) and had to replace the 8" CW & P once.
