33x12.5x15 on hilux
I have a 1987 hilux. I want to put 33x12x15 on 15x8 rims on it but have been told these are to big & not legal & I will not get a wof is this right ?.
I have enough lift to fit these wheels just don't want to fork out for new tyres that wont be legal

Its not the tyres, its the rims... you must fit factory rims to any vehicle, or rims with factory width and backspacing.
The rules state that your track width (centreline of one rim to centreline of the other) must be +/- 25mm of factory spec.
The standard aftermarket 8" rim on a Hilux is 2" wider than factory steel 6" rims, therefor the track width will be 50mm greater than factory spec (as the backspacing is the same, so each side is pushed 2" further out, pushing the centreline 1" further out on each side, therefor adding 2" or 50mm to the overall figure)
This requires cert, and will also probably need rubber/glass flares to keep the tread inside the guards.
So yeah, sorry... welcome to the nightmare the LTSA have created... don't get me started on them...

I've heard some real dodgy buggers keep the old wheels & tyres & put them on to pass WOF, I don't think theres anybody like that around here though...
The sad thing is that few would argue that the average old hilux handles far better on a set of 8" rims & 31x10.5's than on the stock rubber.

yea i no all about having larger than standard rims
i got pulled up recently and got a ticket
for rims being overwidth
I tried to tell him they are only slightly bigger than standard
33x14x15 boggers on 12x15 rims!!!
Oh well i got diversion, i must get round to certifying the rims

The other thing the LTSA will ping you on is up sizing your tyres to more than 20mm + Overall Diameter.
On most vehacles the tyre placard will state what size tyres the manufactuers state are acceptable. This also states Load rating and spped rating on them. If the tyres you plan to put on are bigger than +20mm then they will ping you on it, cause it changes the speedo to much. Also some bigger tyres have a lower load rating on them and if it is lower than the tyre placard states it is an illegal tyre.

Not 100% but you will proberlyu find the guys in tyre shops will go on actual size not percentage.
I was running 265/70R15 on my truck and i wanted to put some huge mothers on it, But i had two problems.
1: I would need a gearbox mod kit so i wouldnt blow anything up.
2: I would need to re-do my speedo as it would be out dramatically, Now that on top of the cost of tyres is far to much. So i stuck some 31X10.50R15 GoodYear Wrangler AT/R. And wow. Even though they were +15mm taller it was an acceptable limit.
Just pays to check these things BEFORE getting the tyres, always helps.

for cert theres another guy in chch who does it don someone 3490106. not sure how good he is as got mine through wayne, was quoted $100 cheaper than wayne and told the plate would take 3 to 4 woking days to come through. wayne said 3weeks, mine took 6 weeks due to sum guy who prints the plates up in auck being sick for 2 weeks or sumthing like that. just something you might not be aware of that there is a w8 and you cant get a warrent untill the plate comes through so i was stuck with an illegal vehicle for 6 weeks. you can still get insurance while w8ing on the plat if its up to a warrentalbe standard, just get insurance company to make a note of it. my thoughts

For the record, I think part of the delay with Wayne was that he was incredibly busy and a bit behind in paperwork... The MU cert plate took 2 months to get here...
The "other guy" in Christchurch had a reputation for being very hard on 4WDs when I first got into looking at certs and stuff, so I have always used Wayne and find him very knowledgable and sensible. His views on the LTSA are also worth a listen
