Oil filters for 88 GQ

Hi guys,
Just went down to Ripco Fathers Day specials and got 10L oil, 2 oil filters (1 bypas, 1 normal), air filter and engine oil flush for $130. Seemed good deal as it all added up to $195 at their RRP, although I know someones going to turn round now and say BNT wouldve done same stuff for $40! I was just too lazy after having to follow wife round the mall...
I notice the Repco branded oil is actually Penrite too.
Question: Do I need the expensive bypass oil filter and normal one?? The 2 on truck now are Fram and both same model (PH32 I think from memory). Bit cheaper if can use the 2 cheap ones as theyre $13 as opposed to the bypass one at $48!
I have a '88 GQ Y60 TD42.
If I do need bypass + normal then which one is the bypass...front or rear??
Cheers,
Matt

Might sound like a stupid question......are the threads on the filters the same? when I got repco filters the part numbers were right but the thread on the bypass was smaller and the threads on my truck are exactly the same.

A bypass will not fit on the non bypass and vice versa. If you run one of each, you will have to buy one of each

Cool so i'll pull em off and have a look at the threads on the truck. Thinking they might both be the same considering the Fram ones on there have same model number...
Thanks

From the looks of things it should have either two PH8A filters or otherwise a PH8A as the full flow and a PH5126 as the bypass
bypass filters aren't necessarily always different filters

had the same question with my pig. Went down to Mr Nissan with a chassis number and got the facts. Mine's an 89 and no bypass filters, just two of the normal ones. saying that though, with fram filters on it took a good 8 seconds for the oil pressure to come up. I now run z115's from supercheap and the oil pressure is instant now.

I think its determined by thread type. I had one wrong filter last time. You can't mistakenly stick the wrong one on there, threads and hole size are different. This contradicted what partsmaster had in their catalogue too.
Real awesome when you discover this after you've drained the oil and dropped the filters and can't get back into town

Oil press takes ages to build up on mine after the service too.

Yeah it's got two of same number on it now (PH32 I think..in previous post), Repco catalogue said it needed one normal and one bypass so took them and can take back and swap if it's not right.
The threads are indeed very different sizes on the new filters so will easily see what the case is when remove others but really dont see how I need two different models when ones on now are same model number!!
I suspect will be yet another case of Repco catalogue inaccuracy. In fact their catalogue did have the wrong air filter too but I overrode that and got the "wrong one" which is right

Cheers,
Matt

PH32s have been superseded by PH8As, so you'll have one of the trucks that uses the same filter for ff and bp. Make sure you get a refund on the bypass you were supplied with at repco, that's a horrendous price for it!

Took bypass back cuz was 2x Z115's needed.
New to Safari's and first trip to Repco for parts...and already been given wrong oil filter and attempted to give me wrong air filter too. Seems their catalogue is as good on Safari's as it is for Suzuki's!
Thanks for advice.
Incidentally...after fitting new filters and filling er up the oil pressure gauge hasnt moved...I know some guys here were saying it can take a while but seems that referred to few minutes? And was instant with Z115's?
Filled up, left idling for 20 minutes, took for spin up hillroad and back (5 mins) and then left idling for another 10 mins, nothing on gauge. Gauge was working before the change.
Any idea's??

Told ya. As for the oil pressure gauge, is it sending a signal back, you didn't knock any wires changing the filters, it does happen. Or could be blocked.

Pull the sender out and clean it with brake cleaner or something like that. They have a habit blocking and have a very small inlet hole. Basically the sender is crap and unreliable and I'd suggest fitting an aftermaket one. (plus gauge)
