Just after a bit of a sanity check to see if Ineed to upgarde anything, after just completing my first auto-electrical project, (and very proud of it) so hoping I am not about to hold myself out to be caned about what a dumb-arse thing I've done....

1989 LN106 Hilux

already has 2 x 55w spots hard wired into high beam

but need more light (for rabbits, possums, pajero drivers etc)

so have added 4 x 100w spots, mounted on rail above the cab.

DO I NEED TO UPGRADE MY ALTERNATOR or anything else?

each pair wired to their own relay
each pair on their own on/off switch on the dash, so I can choose if they are on or off with high beam
using reasonable wire with 20amp fuses
I can flatten the battery in about a minute if truck is not running!

can see there is a reasonable draw on the battery form the bettery amp meter in the dash but all seems ok...

anything else I need to add to make sure this setup keeps going and doesn't
a) burst into flames
b) kill battery
c) screw other electrics?

any and all feedback welcome. (I think)

from what I have read, that only applies to the bumper.

anything on the roof is not a WOF issue.

otherwise how would the hundreds of other vehicles out there with spots on the roof get wof'd?

Go to the LTSA website and look up the "working lights" section of the WOF rules. Here it explains why they are exempt. It has all been explained on here before in other posts.

Talk to petefj40. He has the sun mounted on his roof rail and had to comply with WOF laws. They need to able to be disconnected when driving on the road. Ie: on a loom which you can unplug. Pete's set his up this way.

I'm pretty sure if the ones on the roof aren't hooked up to your high beam and have their own remote switch makes them legal.
But yeah. As Al says. Mine are detachable. The rack simply unbolts and the harness uses a trailer plug.




I use the factory LS1 alternator. No problems powering them up all night. Engine on or not.
But these two deep cycle dry cell puppies help out big time.



Looks a little more tidier these days than that. But you get the idea.

So x6 IPF's on top and x4 on the high beam switch. x2 of those HID Narva's.
The alternator/batteries never fail.

Not if they are classed as "working Lights" Al. Working lights are not subject to a WOF and can be switched on any old how at any time.
This I know, as all 7 roof lights I have are classed as "working lights" and are independently switched separately from the Hi/Lo lighting circuit. 5 of the lights are clear lenses and 2 are diffused.
All you need to tell the WOF guy is that the lights are "working lights".

Hope you've got your lights sorted.

Here is what I've done to my L200.....


-4 Hella Rallye 4000 @ 100w each on the roof bar
-2 Narva 100w on the bull bars
(plus I've now added 2 extra lights on the roof bar as well - 2 x Narva 100w)
That's 800w so far without counting the headlights and tail lights etc (that's drawing 66amps just with the spotties! With the other lights it's close to 80amps!).
Because the std alt (50A)couldn't keep up, I've replaced it with a higher output alt (90A) off another mitsy. I've also beefed up the cabling from the alt to the battery. The next step is to fit a dual battery set up.
