mcleans island tracks closed to 4wds

Post by JR »

probably been closed off for ages but never noticed, went down today for a bit of a play and concrete blocks over all the tracks. apperntly doing to much damage to the stop banks.
now they're asking people to go up past weddons ross rd,so went up there for look, but no tracks like down by mcleans.
dont go there to often, but a a bit of a shame to lose it, sure a lot of others used it more often.

This is why they have set aside a designated play area on the north side of the river for us "off roaders" to play. It has been a well publicised fact that they wanted all off roaders out of the McLeans Island area.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Some signs as to where the 4x4 area is wouldn't hurt.

one word Search
Signs cost money and get vandalised as quickly as they are put up so I spose that is why they are not there, but then I don't use the area so I don't know if there are any.

I haven't been there for a long time but I think there are signs down by the motorway bridge on the north side stating what grones are for 4wd users.
Stop banks are for flood protection. Fine driving on them but it is an offence to damage them. Ecan have rangers running around that area all the time. This happened down Ashburton way and 4wders doing the damage were sort after by the cops. Big article in local rag over it. Nig

i think if these people knew the importance of the stock banks they would not treat them the way they do.

Man there is some
Dick heads that turn up out there. I live close by so usually take the dog out there for a run and swim he loves it. While I'm there I'm almost certain to see some dick heads some in 4wd and some in cars just racing around doing donuts tearing the place apart. Also nearly every time I go there I see a new stolen car dumped after its had a good thrashing with all the windows smashed. I enter where the pylons are off Mcleans island rd the other day driving back on the shingle rd a car had crashed up the bank on the shingle rd how? Why? Stupid and very lucky not to flip the car.

Yep heaps of f*ck wits down there I don't live that far away from the river but hardly ever go there anymore, The rangers don't care if you go down the river most of the year, we were asked to avoid it once cos some birds were nesting/breading from Dec to Feb.

im always up the river salmon or trout fishing these guys are such a pain in the behind. And with the petrol prices so high one wonders where they get the money to waste doing burn outs and cruising round town.

Any one know how you can enter the Waimak on the south side near Mcleans Island? i went to go fishing there last week where the pylons are and cant get to the river bed as its all blocked off. Any ideas where you can access the river on the south side?

The next road to river bed is Weedons Ross Road about 10 minutes west of mcleans island. You can go all the way to the gorge from there . Going back towards town is more of a challenge as you have to cross the main stream and the river is bit narrower from there onwards and you are talking jet boat water.
