My alternators faulty at the moment and gave me a flat battery last night but when I finally got it crash started then the PRE HEAT (Glowplugs) light didnt go out and im not sure if the glowplugs r doin ther job. Now every time i start it the glowplug light stays on and never turns off and stays on while I drive. Any thoughts? Should I still b drivin it?

Oh yeh forgot to say, my trucks an '87 Toyota Hilux Surf, LN61, 2L-T engine. I just diconnected the wire that goes into where the glow plugs are in case they are staying on. Could it be the relay? mmmm
Cheers

My Surf is having a midlife crisis and its hitting the old pocket a bit hard lol

hey dan hows it goin?
have u checked your glow plugs yet to see if there burnt out?
It may be that your glow plug timer is not turning the glowplugs off after the engine is started causing them to burn out.
so u may need to get an aftermarket glowplug timer fitted

By running with a dead alternator and low battery voltage your relay has probably welded it's contacts together,to test your glow plugs you can measure with a multimeter resistance should be less 1ohm (approx ) The easiest way is to pull them out and connect across a battery and make sure the tip glows red,If it doesn,t glow at all or glows half way up the electrode then bin it.
Not sure were the glow relay is on the hilux, but if there is power on the rail with the ignition key off then id suspect the relay,If the relays coil wires have power all the time(ie the small wires)then the problems with the glow plug timer.
hope this helps

Thanks Scotty,
Is there anyone in Christchurch that can give me a hand to check all this stuff out as well as give me a hand to do an alternator swap for couple of dozen? Im still a real novis on diesels as my auto class last year only did petrol engines and I dont have enough tools or knowledge to know what im doin without buggering sumthing up (im more of a practical learner than out of a book) lol.
Any help would be great and much appreaciated,
Cheers,
DAN

If its the glow plugs, pour hot water over it... or park it in the sun
