Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
Right O folks here's your chance. If you prefer action to writing submissions this is for you.
As many of you know through the other Waipara River Thread there is a Draft Management Strategy which basically shuts 4WDers out of the Waipara River. SH1 to the Gorge.
This will be your day
SUNDAY 26th September
Assemble 10.30am at Sefton.
To keep things orderly turn into Amores Road then right into Rangiora Leithfield Rd and Right again into Pembertons Road.
This should provide us with enough room for up to 1000 trucks.
Please don't block the road.
Listen on UHF & CB channel 11.
We will then go to Amberley via the Back Road to cause as little disruption to others as possible.
We will Drive past the HDC offices and onto the Waipara River.
Turn into the Riverbed on the left and then go DOWNSTREAM. We will assemble out of site of SH1 so we don't have rubber neckers smashing into each other.
There will be a place there where people can sign a pre written submission. A Sausage Sizzle will also opperate to cover costs.
At a time to be arranged a small delegation will present the Submissions to a representative of the HDC or failing that to someone in the Waipara River Working Party.
Please no Hooning as we will try and have the News Media there.
Tell everyone about this. Lets show them that its NOT GOOD ENOUGH to just shut us out. After all the River has been used for more than 50 years by people in 4WD's. The people who want us out have only had title for less than 20 years.
Tell us your coming, Tell us how many mates are coming. Tell Campers, Tell Fishermen. Tell Everybody.
PM me if you need more info
Cheers
Graham

Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
Im not sure this is a good idea.
Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
I see there have been quite a few views, but no further comment since tallsam66's post.
I would be interested in knowing what peoples opinions are on this proposed course of action.
Tallsam, do you have reasons for your reluctance that you would be willing to share?
OVERSZ, do you have any response?
Cheers

Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
The only part im not too sure about is a large number of vehicles driving down the river.
Your aiming for 1000 vehicles.... not a good idea in that or any riverbed..... not exactly treading carefully in my opinion.

I agree with Tallsam66.
Wouldn't it be better to be in view of people passing by to get the most attention/support rather than out of sight?

I understand not wanting rubberneckers on a 100k strip of straight road. So why not have everyone park up at the Hanmer turn off intersection??
Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
Ok. This is not a river trip. I have been reliably informed that there is an area of the River Bed down stream and out of sight of SH1 to accommodate a huge number of vehicles.
(I hope to personally check the spot out tomorrow)
People traveling on SH1 over the bridge will be distracted by a large gathering and its the last thing I want is for there to be an accident because of us. Further the people we are trying to influence are not those driving along SH 1
I will need to leave the discussion and I hope there is plenty for a few days as work calls in Nelson.
Cheers

Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
I'd be keen to support the cause. But if there's only a few trucks going? I don't see the point.
If the lack of interest in this thread is anything to go by. That speaks volumes.
Sorry Graham.

Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
I think the thread is quiet because alot of us in Canterbury have more pressing issues at the moment. bad timing really IMHO.
Having said that, do not underestimate the power of visibility of numbers. I have been involved with several protests/strike actions in my time and visibility of numbers have had a good effect on the outcomes of the issues. I personally think this is a good idea and will be there.

Pretty hard if we are all out of view though Al (down river).
Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
It's the HDC that needs to see the numbers Pete, not the public and I think the planning for this will incorporate the council offices and maybe even the working party.

Ill be there too & im telling everyone i can to be there too...just didnt want to go down river with a large number of vehicles as i feel that would be counter productive.
We certainly need the media to be there & we need to be as visible as possible.

Well if we all took that attitude then we may as well consider the river shut down with no access by HDC.
I'll be there for my small part and if everybody else makes the effort (including other clubs) then the attendance will speak volumes!

Merely trying to rark everyone up. Kick this thread alive.
It's kind of working. But like Al says. People have been busy after the quake.
Still. Most people get the time to jump online though don't they.

Yeah we've only got one chance to shut this lot down once and for all, like Graham said if the dept and 'precious land owners' get their foot in then the obvious will happen, it'll be a precedent.
I'd hate to think what rivers or OTHER PUBLIC AREAS will be targeted next

Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
Back from Nelson.
Guys its all go. I have peeps emailing me from all over. I will do a local Clubs roundup by tomorrow night. Several coming from South Canterbury and some coming from Nelson. Im hopeful of a group from the Otago Clubs.

Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
Good on ya. Thanks for the words. Getting heaps of emails tonight. Press release is out. Lets hope we get coverage.
We have an advert going in the 2 newspapers asking people who live in the Hurunui to question the Local Body Candidates on their views.
The question goes something like.
How do you feel about the Waipara River being accessible to just a chosen few?
So folks if you are a rate payer ask the questions.
I hope to have a list of contact numbers on here tomorrow.
Fitzy just get all your mates to come.
Cheers

Thanks Rick

Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
cant be there coz I'm too far away and theres lots of sea between here and there but I hope the rally is supported well enough for HDC to take notice of the user groups and individuals they are leaving out of their draft management plan and re-draft it accordingly to cater for them. There is always going to be different conflicts amongst different receration groups but workable compromises can always be found if everyone considers everyone elses viewpoint.
Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
Thanks for the support. You can still Submit.
Even if its just 1 or 2 lines to say that you oppose the plan.
This is for online feedback. 25 words

Re: Waipara River Peacefull Protest Day
If you live in the Hurunui District Ask your local candidate running for council
“How will you vote on the issue of ongoing
public access to the Waipara River?”
“Do you support access to the Waipara River for just a Chosen Few?”
You need to Ask the Questions or you could lose the Waipara River for recreation for you and future generations
This issue of ongoing public access to the Waipara
River will come before Council this term.
