Putting in Diff Breathers - Please help!

Post by aLUX »

I want to put diff breathers on my 2001 Hilux.

Keen to do the work myself as I want to learn but not quite sure about a few things. :?

Things (I think) I know: (or think I should do it)
Smash the caps off
Pipe/tube and pipe clip frpm rear diff up into engine bay with air breather thing/tiny pod filter on top.
Run another from the gearbox and another from the front diff.
Tap both the gearbox and front diff tubes into the rear so its just one main run.
Cable tie the run from the rear diff to the brake lines and follow that to the engine bay.

I need help with:
Anything that is wrong with the above for starters :?
What type of pipe or tube should I use - cheap bunnings crap or what
what type of pipe/tube joiners to use and where from
any specialist skills/tools I will need?
Where the breather cap is on the gearbox and the front diff
How much slack to leave in the run to compensate for susspension

Any help/knowledge is much appreciated and needed. :D

Ive only put breathers on my front & rear diffs..so cant comment on the gearbox.
The breather will undo with a small spanner....take 1 out & go to some where like Taylors & get some brass fitting to screw in from memory i think they are 1/4 NPT.
Then go to Para or somewhere simialr & get some good quality rubber pipe..i used fuel pipe....its strong & wont get harmed by heat or oils.
Run the pipe to somewhere dry.I ran the front 1 into the aircleaner & rear up past the tail light & as far up the pillar as i could get.I fitted a plastic inline fuel filter to the end to stop dust getting in.

Sweet that would be awesome, When are you available to get that stuff man? Anything will help even if its advice!

Next weekend at RW, you getting involved? I am keen to head up, if you want to come out with me I got the passenger seat free. If I manage to get the weekend off work that is.

i usually use 6 or 8 mm air line tubing with the push lock fittings. Pretty strong stuff, easy to put in and take out when needed and clear line so you can see if you get shit in it or full of water.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

Yeah that was my thought too. Although I just looked at the clear tubing at bunning because I was there at the time. Seemed pretty good stuff and cheap in cost. Only concern was is that you get what you pay for. Whats air line tubing - same stuff or not???

As far as how much slack to allow for suspension movement, best thing I found was to cable tie the breather line to the brake line.
Last time I did breathers I used 5/16 (8mm) fuel line. But that was only cos we had it at work  I teed them into one line that ran up beside the brake master with one of the factory breathers on the end of it, (with the one way valve removed from under the cap)

Will see you up at RW on saturday if ya get time off

Cheers for the info fellas.

Cheers to Lynx I have two - front and back, took the whole breathers out and used airline with the original breathers on top.

Behind the tail light for the reat and up into the engine bay for the front.
