Vitara Exhaust Manifold/Front pipe issues

Post by GWH »

I am aware of the double skinned front pipe closing off on early Vitaras.

What i want to know is does this issue apply to the '96 onwards (1.6L) vehicles? ........or had the factory sorted it out by then?

My 1996 appears to be stock cast manifold and front pipe, but has done 188,000km, so surely this issue would have happened by now eh?

Cheers.

I had a close look while rebuilding the gearbox on ours, its a 1996 1.6, and I couldn't see anything that resembled the strange double skin arrangement that caused the issues on the earlier vehicles, just a cast manifold and a couple if flexi joints.

Removed the cat converter from the system though :D :D

Pop into your local muffler shop and ask them, they see it all.My local guy has a cut off from an early 90s 16v escudo and its an impressive selling tool for a set of headers

yup seen that bent bit of bottom factory header too, If it's the one from Muffler Services Im pretty sure that bit of pipe actually came of my Mrs old Zook from quite a few years ago, she had put it in to have a set of extractors fitted and when they cut the factory exhaust off thats what they found.

The local Pitstop was hopeless, they reckon they have never ever seen a sucked in double skinned front pipe on a Vitara of any age, one bloked reckon he had read about it tho.

So that was a waste of time. So i unbolted the 'J' section front pipe off the the manifold and looked at it myself, it is fine.

I am picking that the factory must have fixed this issue by the time they got to the later models.

I will wait until part of the exhaust needs replacing before i fit extractors.

Cheers.

Obviously not always but the comment, "I've never seen one but I've read about it" can still mean "I have no idea what you are on about" See people say that all the time at work.
