Cut thru remote lead on winch/fixed lead but no power???

Post by STUKLUX »

I had a mate who was controling my winch on a recovery when the remote lead got caught in the cable and shorted the wires,we fixed the remote lead but now it won't work the winch at all :x .Is there a safety fuse or something in the winch or will it be more serious like the solinoids are fryed :( ??The winch is a Warn XD9000i.I know nothing about winches except if you have one every one calls you when there stuck!!

Would I find that in the main built in box above the cable drum?

nah I doubt there would be a fuse in there, there will be a feed wire from the fusebox, main wiring loom or from somewhere to power the remote plug on the control box

My xd9000i has no fuses in the control box.
The older style control boxes get power from the main battery feed into the solenoid pack.

Not sure if there is a fuse in the control handle, nothing mentioned in manuals.

As said above, the older style also had a common earth with winch body and the solenoid packs wont work unless the winch is grounded.

The newer units have a separate earth for the control pack.

So you could have grounding issues and or a dud solenoid.

I think you need a new mate or in cab winch controls!

If you know someone with a warn 9500 try and borrow there remote and see it it works with your winch.

You still may have a bad connection in your one.

There is no fuse in the winch that I know of.

I have a warn XD9000i. Undo cap screws on winch gear box end while sitting on bench, and separate slightly (5 to 10mm). Then remove cap screws on other end of top cover and remove cover. Check thin wires from plug to solinoids, it's quite possible that one or more are fried.
Solinoids can be tested with a multi-meter or test light and a battery.
Hope this helps

Do the solinoids click when you activte them?

The controller has 5 wires.

Unles you modify it at the solinoids you need all 5 wires to make it work. Not only do they switch power, they also switch the earth.

1 wire for in
1 wire for out
1 wire for power
1 wire for earth
1 wire goes to all four solinoids (earth)

When you activate the switch it sends power to the two solinoids to close and earths all 4 solinoids.

Note there are two styles of controllers for Warn winches.
3 wire (early stuff and some of the XD9000i's)
And the 5 wire.
They changed them for what I can only imagine was better earth's and also to stop people operating the winch.
There was a trick where by you could use a paper clip and short out the connections in the remote plug and drive the winch.
People would get the cable out and hook it to the rear over the roof and activate the winch.

Pulled the roof flat.

The newer style remotes and wiring remove that issue....
