To inner tube or not to inner tube . . .

Hi guys,

Just after some opinions . . .

I'm getting a new set of 15x8 (-19) rims later on this week, just wondering what your thoughts are about fitting inner tubes versus tubeless ? The tyres that I already have that are going on are the 30x9.5x15 Maxxis Buckshot Mudders. Inner tubes would set me back another $40 per wheel, are they worth it ?

Any advice appreciated.

what are you going to do with vehicle

being 9.5" tyres on a 8 inch rim, they could be prone to popping a bead or two if you push them off road

one thing for sure, if you decide to go with tubes, make sure your tyre shop remove all forms of little stickers inside new tyres, they rub on your tubes and cause pinhole leaks which piss you off in the future

I second the rim size. I ran 15x7's on my zuk with tubes and had no problems (ran as low as 7psi on a few occasions too), just be wary of shit working past the bead and wearing through the tube (like the stickers will)

its personal choice mate, theres pros and cons either way and it depends on your tyres, your truck, what your doing and where and how your driving.... I prefer to run them :mrgreen:

to run tubes are you thinking of running low pressure?
might not be so wise on 30" tyres??? you will only minimise your diff clearance even more..
theres that compramise of running enough low pressure so ya tyres are softer but not so much you lose heaps a ground clearance...

Just yeah I guess it up to you, and what type of terrain you want to go on. We have run tubes in our tyres for probably 7 years now and never pinched or popped one. Our 4wd club it is just about a rule for all trucks to be running tubes, because most of our runs involve mud which tube less you risk rolling a tyre off a rim. If you look at this the trucks with tubes on the run all made it up the hill. Then the turbo safari with twin diff locks running 18psi did not http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sivfk5g0xJY

It all up to what you want to do with your 4wd.

and coz you asked for advice if you do go for tubes save up a few more bucks and get the heavier tractor tubes with dump valves and lock rings so theres less likelyhood of the tube spinning and the valve stem dropping back into the rim, with the tractor tubes you have to drill the valve hole from 12mm out to 16mm on your rims

when you air down with dump valves you unscrew the stem count to 3 or 4 and stick it back in or your tyre will be flat :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

(my icecream still had a hard lump in the middle so EPIC FAIL)

I run tubes in my muds and I wouldn't go back to tubeless. More reliable, lower pressures etc.

I say go for the tubes. :D

Hell guys, thanks for the quick responses and all the info. I think I'll bite the bullet and go for the tubes, easier to fit them now than later. I figure they will help if I decide to drop the tyre pressure for mud or beach driving.

Go tubes...
I had two sets of wheels.
AT's tubeless.
Muds Tube'd.
The AT's would always leak at the beads after a run...

As said if putting in tubes, remove all stickers on rims and inside tyres.
Also use heaps of talc powder when they mount them up.
This allows the tube to move alittle when aired down.

This is from a 4 wheeler who is also a tyre dealer. (Not me but another chap)

Also I had a set with tubes and very little talc.. The tubes were almost bonded to the rims and tyres.
Lucky I never spun a tyre on the rim, they would have torn the tubes to shreds.

Hi Calvin, thanks for the detailed response, really appreciate it, I will pick up a set of tubes with the new rims tomorrow and tell the fitment guys about the talc powder and also make sure there are no stickers anywhere near the tube.

Definitly Tubes :!: :!: :!:

You will get pissed of with slow leaks from around the bead that mean you have to pump they tyres up every couple of days after the first time you take them off road.

Believe me, its a PIA!!!!!

The extra expense is well worth it :D :D

Its so #### annoying getting to your truck with flats from beads not sealing...DB knows what im talking about!
