80 series handbrake Mods?

Ive just stripped my 80 series rear diff down to the bare housing (no suspension mounts, brakes, hubs etc) ready to go into my 70 series.
Seeing Ive got it all in bits I thought itd be a good time to look into modifying the brake set up to give me a simpler handbrake as that seems to be the most common complaint about the 80s.

What Im wanting to know is if anyones modified their 80s brakes??
What have you done to them?
Have you changed the whole set up, if so what parts did you use?

Ive got a complete mr2 rear park brake set up in the garage, so I was thinking of trying to make something work out of that?

Other thing is it seems Ive got an 80 diff with the bigger brakes an my farking 15" beadlocks dont fit over the original calipers :x :x

Wheel spacers dude.

Been there - done that.

The NZ new trucks came out with 15" rims so sounds like you got diff out of an import.

WTF you sure you don't mean 16" Matt

14" is something I've never seen on an 80

MrOffroader just put 15s on his 16" clad 80, lots of caliper grinding involved

My bad - meant to type 15" on NZ new trucks.

80 series started coming out with bigger brtakes and 16 inch rims late 92 same time as the 24 valve engine. Configuration depends on the market the vehicle was intended for. In Aus they still had 15 inch rims and 12 valve motor in the 100 series base model. Having an axle from the bigger brake model is a good thing because it also had the strengthened front diff.

Subaru calipers have been done to death, Issues with pad contact on the discs an the fact Ive already got the Mr2 calipers rule that out

Strengthened front diff is somewhat irrelevant to me as Im using a Pootrol front diff.

Could an probably will end up using spacers or grinding the calipers to clear the wheels but thats not really what Im interested in,
Im far more interested in getting a reliable low maintainance handbrake setup. So thats what im interested in hearing about

from what ive read, the mr2 is the best option, atleast the pads contact the disc, no shitty drum setup, or theres the driveshaft/back of transfer setups.

Can you run them as secondary brakes (on a bracket) so you have the std brakes and then the hand brakes seperate - MR2 ones? Easier to set up fiddles later...

Wouldnt need cert would it? not interferring with OEM system, just not using it.

Dunno legalty.

Cert?? You havent seen my build thread then   this diffs going in my BJ74

Dont want to run two sets of calipers, wont need fiddles with the locker. I was hoping i could make the brake set up slightly smaller so the 15" rims will fit by doing away with the huge factory rear set up

from memory, when skid reassembled the brakes, he adjusted the brakes at the shoes, but the cable was also stretched so they adjusted it there as you would anyway. But the cable must be very stretched.

sorry for going OT  but...

maybe because when they are adjusted corectly and looked after they are one of the best handbrake systems available...

theres a reason they dont use calliper opperated parking brakes on a 3 ton bus and that is because they dont hold. what are the calliper opperated parking brakes on? small cars less than half the weight.

dont take this the wrong way, modding shit is cool but there has to be a good reason for it.

Good point but shit the handbrake on the subaru callipers on the back of my flatdeck sticks like glue when you pull it on, one of the best handbrakes I've ever had on a vehicle

is it possible to drill holes in these rear brake drums to make them easier to clean out? Someone staretd a thread about this a while ago - wonder what the result was?

Good point about the weight, This is goin to be a 90/10% bush/street truck. Are you still running the 80 park brake in you 40?
I was also toying with the idea of using a electric line lock for an auxillary parking brake when in the bush, so when its switched on it activates when the park brake is applied, (wired up thru the park brake switch)

yes standard 80 park brake, and its awesum. when its clean and adjusted up, you have to remember when they fiill up with mud the shoes wear slightly due to clearance and then they seem out of adjustment all of a sudden, just a clean and a few clicks and its mint again.

i thought about using the line locker for a parking brake as well when i was building but never did.
