I was just wondering what the full name of DoC was. I thought I heard from somewhere that it is: Department of conservation and Access? or was that its original name?

I am not entirely sure. Was just curious really.

Its neverbeen called the Dept of conservation and access?

It was formed in 1987 out of a split up of NZ Forest Service, NZ Wildlife service, dept of Lands and Surveys and the National Parks board

The original Conservation Act had 'Recreation' reasonably well recognised. That might have been what caused confusion, as for recreation you need access!
