PTO winch questions.

Hi all.

So I've ended up with some PTO winches. I have one here and its from an MQ? safari (as pictured in the for sale thread).

I'm wondering what the main differences are between this earlier PTO winch and the later model GQ winches. Is it still a good winch, is it as strong, will it fit a GQ, what parts are compatable (gearbox extension, shafts, engagement lever etc)

Also- has anyone ever seen one hydraulically driven (a pto driven by a hydraulic motor)? Just curious

2 mins on google came up with:

Keep in mind another way to set up a PTO is to just use the box. The box then drives a PTO hydraulic pump. You can then run hydraulic winch both front and rear off the same PTO box and pump

I have an auto so actually have no way of outputting any kinda PTO drive (that i know of).

Would have to be belt driven hydro pump.

Where to people source their pumps from? Power steering pumps are commonly used but do not flow anywhere near enough.,

The outputs from the gearbox are different between MQ / GQ.

As far as the winch heads go, the worm wheel and drive gear are the same size / ratios. The gear housings are slightly different as the MQ has the input shaft running the full depth of the housing and exits out the front (for a hand-crank), so you cannot interchange drivegears from a MQ into GQ or vice versa.

Freespool end and collars are the same MQ / GQ.

Winch drums are different.

Change transfer case to one with a pto.
Buy a pto output that fits between the auto and the t-case, from some guy in Europe.
Sort out a second t-case as pto. (that a few people are working on at present.)
Take drive direct off the ring gear.
Belt drive off the crank pulley.
Shaft drive off the crank pulley.

I think that's all the options so far but none are bolt on.

There appears to be one exception.....Nissan Atlas / Civilian auto box has a PTO output on it with the same bolt-hole arrangement as the GQ manual box.

Howard first picked up on it and Spuddy has looked at doing it, but went crank drive off his LS1 due to cost of the Atlas / Civilian box, plus you still have the same problem with the fragility of the GQ output.

The second t-case as a PTO is simplest and most robust...give people a bit more time and it will be a winner!

Its the gears that are the problem. A few people use hardened gears now as a result.

They are available, but how readily I'm not sure. The Civilian uses the TD42 in some applications, so they are definately around.

Price was a few $K, which I didnt think was unreasonable if it had been reco'd.
