Soft Wheel Nuts

In checking brakes etc at the weekend I was taking each wheel off one by one and going over everything in behind.

The final wheel had one wheel nut that wasn't going to budge, so a bit more pressure and I now have a very pretzeled looking wheel nut, they are not steel but lightweight alloy and occassionally get very tight.

So now I have to work out some way of getting a shapeless wheel nut off the stud

Any ideas

I do have an air chisel that came with the air compressor I acquired earlier in the year. Do I use that to split the nut??

raid somebodys socket set
get a socket that wont quite fit over nut

bash it on and very slowly undo nut

make sure its somebody else socket set though

coz it will be fukt afterwards

The wheel nuts have a sheet metal cover over them to cover the end of the thread, hopefully you have just spun that around. See if you can chisel it off and then should still be a nut underneath.

i had a similar problem and have bought a nice socket for removing buggered nuts .It looks like an impact socket but has a reverse cut thread on the inside .It might work for you .Come round and grab it

A bit of heat will help too (not much just hot to the touch not glowing)

Success today , the special socket that I borrowed off Sig managed to quite easily remove the soft cover over the steel nut that Vitara888 mentioned. Then the right size socket, a long breaker bar, and a bit of elbow grease got the nut moving. Had to repeat the same process on another one too. Time for a new set of wheel nuts.

I had tried Skid's trick with an old socket, but chose one that was too cheap and split it up the side.

Thanks to the suggestions, the ideas and the socket - I will drop that back off in the next day or two Sig
