Any exhaust gurus on here ?

Hi guys,
I've got the next warrant due in Nov and I'm pretty sure my exhaust will now fail badly (I can now almost poke my finger through the holes in the muffler!)
So, my terrible cheapskate plan was this . . . go round to pick a part, find a newish V6 2L-ish car, look underneath and if the muffler is roughly the same size, hack it out and weld it in place of mine.
But, if any of you could recommend a muffler and resonator combo that I could just buy and weld in that would be much better!
I could go to a exhaust shop, but I'm really after a better job than they tend to to. I actually want to complete the welding, then clean off the exhaust and throw some hi-heat paint on to make it look a bit better overall.

So you want to do a better job than an exhaust shop by going to pick a part and getting a second hand muffler and welding it in
Just go to an exhaust parts supplier and buy a damn muffler

Yeah, that's why the line right underneath the one quoted said:

The problem is that I don't know of any places and can't seem to find any online that sell a decent range of mufflers without wanting to do the fitting. No use walking into pitstop or midas, have had terrible exhaust experiences with both.
Any recommendations about where to buy, I have no problem spending the money, just want to make sure I get the right bits!

Thanks for the advice guys, really appreciate it. I ended up going round to Al's mufflers on target road on Saturday and having a chat with one of the guys there. Got a pretty good vibe from the place, so Ill get them to do a resonator and muffler combo which should hopefully pep up the V6 a bit.
